I'm going to have to remove the alt from my truck this weekend... the thing is, the truck is ~150 miles away from home, AND I'll be over there with my car absolutely full already, and I don't have any tools there...
I was just wondering if someone here knew by heart the basics (like the size of the socket I'll need to grip and move the accessory belt tensioner... and, ideally, the socket sizes for the alt bolts as well, and any other tools I might need...)
(1994 7.3 IDI)
FWIW, I'm realizing I could answer those questions easily for a GM 6.5 IDI diesel -- I've worked on it a few times already -- so I figure it's pretty likely that a few of you guys who have spent time getting your hands dirty in 6.9/7.3 engine bays can provide those simple answers from memory as well!
Much appreciated in advance!! It'd allow me to bring the right tools only to the "jobsite"...
I'm almost 100% sure I'm serp... now you've brought a doubt in my mind, and at the moment I can't even pop the hood to confirm, but I'd bet the truck itself (against nothing) that it's serp.
However, I'm confident that anyone who can answer my question(s) will already know that anyway...
you should be serp belt. the tensioner pulley is 15mm to move it to release tension on the belt. there are four bolts that hole the alt to the big aluminum braket that hold the alt to the engine. i am pretty sure they are 9/16" bolts, they might be 1/2" though. you will also need a 10mm socket on a 1/4" drive ratchet to disconnect a wire from the back of the alt. the two other connections on the alt are just clip on.
-15mm socket and a 1/2" drive ratchet or breaker bar for the tensioner pulley.
-10mm socket & 1/4"drive ratchet. ( a short 10mm btw, long won't work)
-9/16" or 1/2" socket for the alt mounting bolts.
