Performance options for the 400 are mostly aftermarket as it was never a performance engine as OEM. You can find everything you need to turn it into a firebreather here:

TMeyer, Inc. Precision Automotive Machining

The minimum to make it a runner is a cam change, along with whatever the cam change requires spring wise etc.

As for a 5 speed, the ZF 5 speed will bolt up, but some mods are needed to deal with the pilot bearing. More than you'll ever want to know here:

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...zf-tranny.html

If you want a performance 5 speed, you are looking at a TKO or T56 6 speed, with an aftermarket bell.

These folks will be more than happy to help you in your quest:

Modern Driveline - TREMEC T5 / TKO Transmission Conversion - 5 speed & 6 speed solutions to swap your Ford Mustang, Falcon, Cobra, Hotrod into Overdrive! Performance Parts

Having said all that, what engine is in it and have you ever heard of the 351w?

right now there is a 352 big block which came in the 67 but not the 68 im thinking it has a reman plate on it so its a fairly new motor and runs ok but with the factory 3 on the tree. It screams any time i take it on the interstate and do alot of traveling back and forth on the interstate plus i love 5 speeds

Do you want a truck trans or performance?

Either way, if that engine is a good runner and you are satisfied with the power, you could adapt a ZF or performance trans to it for far less than the engine swap.

Scroll down to the bottom of this thread. I included some information and a performance build for the 400..: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...l#post12325576

Here's another one from Hot Rod magazine. How does 556 lb-ft of torque and 496.7 hp sound to ya?: How We Got Over 497 hp from Ford's 400M Engine - Hot Rod Magazine

Yeah, I thought so.

2x on Modern Driveline.

A set of headers and a good 4bbl intake and 600 cfm carb will wake up that 352.

Stock, the 400 is a pooch. Lots of potential, as you can see from the links provided. Not cheap--figure $6000 to make that high powered job.

JMO but I would stay with the 352 for now.

i actually though about it for a while i guess i should try to find a 5 speed for the 352 i think it would be the cheaper and easier route especially considering i drive the truck daily from the base and back

I only read 22 posts into that swap thread and saw nothing about starter mounting issues. I'd be real surpeised if there aren't some.

Do you have a link to the info on putting a ZF up to an FE? I'd sure be interested in that swap.

There isn't a 5speed to bolt straight to an FE, but a much cheaper alternative is a four speed and different rear gearing. A 360 tends to be pretty happy with 3.55 to 3.73 gears, No matter what you do, though, it's still an FE and will still drink the gas.

i decided to stick with the 352 and find a 4 or 5 speed to put behind it any suggestions on what to go with as far as trans or rear end gearing. I do do alot of highway and interstate driving which is why i am trying to get away from the 3 speed. and also any idea what rearend comes stock in a 68 f100?
