"Is that really right?"

I'm <strike>with</strike> stupid... so bear with me here. I think I got all the caps and punctuation where I wanted it though, English was never my best subject.

So I know you guys just love it when we "noobies" install gauges and start with all kinds of "Is that really right?" questions.

So I'm trying to get in touch with someone that has a mechanical boost gauge, since I'm fairly certain that 0-1PSI does not spinning tires make for a test hammering.
I was thinking "oh ****** I killed my truck" so I drove it around the block (digital sensors installed gauge not installed) and it was working fine.
Should my truck drive "normally" if I'm producing no to low boost? or would it be like Xtof's issue where he fixed all of his leaks and lost MPG?

Or should I just run it for a month (or at least round trip to Abq) and see what happens?

And my other stupid question, should that valve on the front of the intake (red hose to wastegate) click like crazy while the engine is off or is that an indicator of try running it with the red hose off to the side?

I think I may be missing your question?

Are you saying you don't have any boost?

Just driving around you will not build much boost. WOT or loads on the engine will allow for more boost.

so seeing almost nothing is an a-ok thing, that's good to know. I wasn't able to find (my search terms must suck) what the stock idle boost should read. And I really don't have money for new boots right now.
I know that climbing hills the boost changes without my engine speed changing (or seems to) since the sound from the engine changes. I guess I will find out for sure the next time I drive it through mountain overpasses with the cruise set.

Yeah at idle there will be little to no boost. Even revving in neutral will not raise it much.

Cruising at 70 or so, I see about 4 PSI. WOT a lot higher, on a stockish truck I would expect around 20.

You will want to plug the red line, many attach it to the boot clamp bolt. Boost at idle - zip. Boost with mellow throttle in town will register at acceleration... barely. Heavy foot should wake the boost gauge out of it's slumber. 4 PSI at 60-65 MPH with 5 PSI at 75 MPH (flat road, no wind). Mountain pass in cruise control? 10 PSI boost on a pretty steep incline. All these numbers are with an empty truck, but towing numbers depend on your load.

The best I got to (and it looked like it stopped) was 15 PSI, but that was from zero to 60 MPH and it hit 15 right about 48 mph and I had to stop at acceleration at 60mph, cuz +5mph is my "limit" for over the speed limit.

Driving to work (level 10 highway miles) I saw the 4 psi @ 60mph and 2-3 psi @ 45mph. Empty truck... unless that one tiny bag of kitchen trash I didn't notice till I was at work.

I'm just glad to know that I didn't screw up the install of the gauges and lose all of my boost. I've driven my Jetta TDI with one boot popped off, and that just sucks.

Thanks for the info guys!

I'm happy I asked all of my "other" EGT questions a while ago... so I don't totally freak just cuz its running at ~220*F at idle. I'm sure I'll have other stupid questions later, but the don't panic till over 200*F on the tranny is good to know too. (per dieselmanor.com for my temp sensor location)
