Just pulled my car trailer 700 miles did great till the last 60 miles when it wouldn't go into high gear. drove 60mph at 2500 rpm the rest of the way. All other gears work fine. Any Ideas? Truck has 265,000 on it , bought it at 245,000. Haven't changed fluid. 700 miles from home

How many RPM's you running?
Any codes?
Is it maybe just the torque converter isn't locking?

Hi John, welcome to FTE!
Interesting how it wouldn't shift up, did you use the tow/haul feature? Was your tow/haul light blinking at all?
And also your truck has a factory maintenance recommendation of a fluid change every 30,000 or 60,000 miles depending on build date. If you don't know when it was last done it needs to get done ASAP!

It ran fine just wouldn't shift into 6th? or 5th? whatever high gear is. Had it out a couple times today with the trailer still hooked up works perfect now. Forced it to downshift several times & it always shifted back up afterwards. I ALWAYS run it in tow/haul mode while towing. Just checked & the fluid is a little low, reading at the cold level when hot. Will add some in a little bit here. A friend who has a shop has a scanner about 40 miles from here. Might go there in the morning to check & possibly change fluid/filter(s).

... I've never used my tow haul mode, does thin not lock out 5th?
What type of truck is this?
Do you know your axle ratios?
I've seen a 6.4 in tow haul mode run in 5th, but I can't remember if he turned tow haul on after being in 5th already.
My experiences have been that people that play with the shifter too much end up buying transmissions sooner.

Transmissions are designed to shift under power, so I don't understand how the transmission cares whether the PCM commands the shift via throttle pedal input or the user commands the shift via the shift lever. My experiences have been that those who don't maintain their transmission end up buying transmissions sooner.

Job 1 trucks with the external transmission filter have a 30,000 mile service interval. Later trucks with the internal filter have a 60,000 mile service interval.

Either the trans is a complete POS in the beginning and gets replaced, or it's good.
Seems like they got some awesome designs going, but lack a little quality control.
