Transmission synchro Assy inserts

I have two new synchro assy for my 56 O/D transmission one has the the narrow (3) inserts on the brass rings and the other has the wider inserts. Can anyone tell what the difference between the two are and do they affect the operation of the transmission I’m thinking that either assy will work in my transmission when I rebuild it.

You have to use the rings and sleeve that match the hub. If you had complete assemblies in both narrow and wide, I suppose you could use either. A quick check with Mac VanPelt would confirm.

Yes, I have both, however why is there a difference on the width of the inserts and why did it change. Everything about the asy is the same except the width of the inserts.

It could be a B-W vs Ford difference. Or a Car vs Truck thing.

So my question remains why did B/W, Ford go from a narrow insert to a wider insert
and is it a smoother, better operation? Sure would be nice to talk to some of those old B/W engineers to find out why it was changed.
