Bill, was it a PBY?
Robert, we'll snag a few donuts, meander over to the parking lot, line up next to Steve's 6.0 who got there early and saved us all some parking spots in the back 40 for a nice group photo or two. Then check out all the trucks, ooh and ahh where appropriate, chat and catch up on the latest happenings, wander over to the SS, pay for tickets, chat, listen, snap some pics, wander the Iowa, listen some more, chat, (note if you stand next to ND, you might listen more than chat, but that's a good thing, 'cause he's got volumes of info). We'll all learn more than we ever knew about WWII and the Iowa's part. In the end, we'll have had a fun day, caught up with new and old friends, been amazed with what engineers, sailors and this country did a 1/2 century ago and feel a little closer to those that gave everything they could for our future.

And when the Iowa tour ends, the LA Maritime Museum is located only a few steps away. The WWII cargo ship SS Lane Victory is located NE and is one of the few museum ships that actually sails out of port several times a year with tour groups aboard, 'round Catalina Island.
Adjacent to the Maritime Museum (has very limited parking, mostly handicapped spaces) is an Acapulco restaurant. More places to eat are located at Ports O Call.
"She who must be obeyed" and I prefer the Ports O Call restaurant as it's located within spitting distance of the main channel. Sit there, eat/drink while watching all the boats/ships pass by.
Ship that was torpedoed/sunk was done so by a submarine. The subs country of origin may surprise you...that is...until you discover when/where this occurred.
Hint: First "all or nothing" battleships (armor where it counted, otherwise little or no armor): HMS: Orion, Thunderer, Conquerer and Monarch, commissioned beginning in 1913.
Edit: Since no one came up with the answer: British submarine HMS Conquerer torpedoed/sunk Argentine cruiser General Belgrano during the Falkland Islands War in 1982.
Belgrano purchased from the USN in 1951, was the former Light Cruiser USS Phoenix with a main battery of 15 6" guns (5 x 3).

the thing one day a week.....
like i said in an earlier post, i doubted you'd have much luck on
a saturday.
and for volunteer and tourist alike, parking in the lot next to the
ship is $1.00 an hour. at this time there is no free pass for volunteers.
i'll see how my schedule plays out for the saturday you have
planned.... but i'd like to show up for donuts, and then put a
few hours in on the boat.... i just signed a contract on a building
on the other side of the vincent thomas bridge, and they are breaking
ground on it monday, and i may be in the middle all the underground
conduit by the time this happens.... we'll see....

So we lost track of this GTG, What is actually suppose to happen for this
USS Iowa G2G - San Pedro, CA
Is it suppose to be touring the ships? Or making them all face in a certain direction?
Hell I don't even own a tug boat, so I guess we pull ropes.
Let me know what's going on with this GTG.
Thanks

that will be addressed when new ropes arrive.... a 10 ton winch
would be perfect for snugging the lines down.... i have a 4 ton,
and that will probably be pressed into service when the time
comes, unless one of you with detroit lockers and a built 6.0 want's
bragging rights.
letting a 4WD diesel PU freak do that would make them absolutely
miserable to be around for a year afterwards.
