i have a quick ? for you guys, i put the 4.56's from my old truck i sold in my new 1, now the old 1 was mainly a play around truck and this 1 im planning on making my full time dd, the old 1 had 4in suspension and 3in body with 37's, this 1 i only put a 4in lift on and thats all its getin with 33's maybe 35's eventualy. but as of right now this thing is getting horrible mpg and a few buddys said that i might have the truck over geared to much, now i live in alot of hills and do alot of highway drivin and yes i am a lil speed demon to and at about 65-70 the truck seems to be runnin kinda hard to me do you guys think i should go back to a higher ratio? i was thinkin maybe 4.10 or 4.30. also the truck has a 5.0 and its ext cab swb so its already kinda workin that 5.0 a bit anyway. wish it had a 5.8

Will be glad to pray for all y'all Unk Bob.

Got another overnight trip Fri. night & return Sat. NOT band this time. Going to Liberty, Ill. Not school district trip. Surprised I got it. Fall break after tomorrow. Fall break bid ALWAYS starts at the top of the list (everybody can bid, first break of the new school year so it always starts at the top) 2 overnight trips, 1 district & the one I got. First person to bud took the district trip & there's A LOT of people between there & me. Good money, glad to get it.

Too many words without saying anything...

What kind of truck is it?
What engine?
What trans?
What current gears?
What current tire size?

And what are you considering "horrible" mpg? Anything over 10 I would call understandable with big tires and little motor. Low gears can actually increase your mpg in town and at lower speeds due to the engine not working as hard, but once you get above the efficient RPM it will go down fast.

Morning all, new job seems to be going well....so far everyone is easy to get along with and I pretty much fit right in with the group. I'd already worked with about half of these guys at another company doing RR track maintenance.

Loving this cool October weather!

Ruben, it's his '96 Ford 4x4.

Nate. Let's put things into perspective. I have 3.50's with my 33" tires. I'm surprised you haven't blown the engine with 4.56's in there. 4.56 is WAAAAAYY too steep for a street truck. You're killing your engine a slow death right now. I don't run 4.56's until I get over 40" of tire. Even with 37's or 38's, I only run a max of 4.11. You just don't need that steep of a gear.

If you think I don't have enough gear, my 300 six tows a 20' car trailer with whatever I want to put on the back with no problem. With 33's, I think 3.73's is the absolute steepest you'd ever want to go. They'll also work great with 35" tires when you step up.

Good Morning Everybody!

Tiff has a doctor's appointment first thing, then it's back here so I can get the heads off of Jeff's Caddy. Then I'm gonna prep the car trailer for some tractor and implement paint. I want to shoot that in the back yard tomorrow morning while I still have some heat in the atmosphere. It's supposed to drop into the 50's for a high on Friday. I can hardly wait to see how I feel when I get up on Friday.

Looking back, that post was a little too harsh...I hadnt had my coffee yet, and just kinda treated it like a post in the technical forums, no hard feelings Nate!

But really, that gear would be fine if you kept your RPM's down on the highway, so 55mph, but we all know that wont work out, so i'd step down in gear ratio or up in tire size. I always say "dont fear the gear", but you have to be ready to adjust drive-style accordingly.

as far as tires and gears go..i try to match things up to what i want the truck for, its hard to build trucks to do it all...low speed hill pulling, heavy trailer towing, high speed traveling getting the mpg of a prius.. but i find for the best give and take with a small V8 street truck, running 33's..a 3:73 gear is what i would usually go with.. 3:50 if i dont use it for work..3:25 if all i care about is mpg..keep the 4:56 if it dont leave the farm...but that is just my opinion

Good morning all. Door stripes are finally spot on. next step is fix the ones on the front of the fenders where they roll off the header panel, that's tonight's project. i gotta get this thing done with a quickness since Patty heads to North Carolina next week to visit her friend Judy's daughter and tour where Dawn works as a marketing person..Hendrick Motorsports.
