Surface preparation:
Rusted surfaces are best; seasoned metal and sandblasted surfaces are also good.

POR-15® is a high-tech, high performance rust-preventive coating designed for application directly on rusted or seasoned metal surfaces. It dries to an incredible rock-hard, non-porous finish that won't chip, crack, or peel, and it prevents rust from recurring by protecting metal from further exposure to moisture.

Since POR-15® chemically bonds to metal, the underlying surface does not have to be sanded before application. As long as loose or flaking rust are removed from the surface, an application of POR-15® will not only cover up the rust and prevent it from spreading, but will also strengthen the underlying metal and seal holes by forming its own membranes.

applied how it was designed (no sandblasting) on my truck with no issues.

id probably put it together without painting or changing anything. by the time the frame rusts through, the truck would be long gone in my book. Ive had 2 frames rust out while owning dozens of vehicles. That is, unless you are painting and detailing the entire truck, such as a frame off restoration. Locally they charge $750 to blast the entire frame and powdercoat it black.

The 2 vehicles were a 70 bonneville where in 90 my jack went thru the frame while changing a tire, and a 84 chevy pickup where in 08 the frame rails were gettin flimsy and starting to have rust holes in it.

Por-15 is pretty fantastic stuff, just wish i bought some of the uv paint as well.
I would highly recommend sand blasting, you can do it on the cheap if you can rent a machine and buy the media. And if you have a spot you don't mind turning into a beach.
The Result speak for it's self.

we used a pressure washer to clean the frame from all the diesel oil and gunk. bottom and top. then just used grinder on the back part of the frame because the whole front was preserved by the oil. it was definitely alot of work but what we did was raised it and i got underneath all the crossmembers and got every single inch of the frame. i used some contraption i made to places i couldnt reach with a brush. i also got covered in por haha while laying underneath it doing the cross members but it looks really good. i preped it according to por with the marine clean and metal prep. i think it worked really well, next thing to paint with por is the underside of cab, firewall and underneath of bed.
