How to Add Reverse Light 1966 F100
I have a 66 F100, 2wd, 4 on the floor truck without the reverse lights built into the tail lights. I don't want to switch to the 67 lenses because I like the look of the 66. My thought was adding a bright LED bulb inside the lens on each side. It would produce red light but light is light. My question is how would I wire the LEDs to turn on when I shift into reverse?

when i was running a Hurst 3-on-the-floor setup in my '68, they sold a bracket/switch that mounted to the shifter.

i assume you're talking about a Ford shifter, but maybe the same type of thing could be used.

Yes, stock Ford shifter as far as I know. I'm not sure what you mean when you ask if the trans shifter top has a reverse switch on it?
Looks like I could use a reverse switch like the Hurst one you linked. I'd just have to make a custom bracket to hold it in place.
Does anyone know where on the 67+ pickups they mounted the reverse switch?
Thanks for the ideas!

Backup lamps were not available for F100/350's, Bronco's and Econolines until 1967.
Back up lamps were part of new Fed mandated Safety Standards for light trucks that also included padded dash, lap seat belts, heater and defroster, left side outside mirror.
Beginning 1967: With A/T, backup lamps operated by NSS / 3 M/T has bracket on column for backup lamp switch, adjacent to 1st/reverse selector lever / 4 M/T, switch threads into shift tower.
1967/72 F100/350 Styleside taillamp assys (assy includes metal body, swagged in sockets with wiring) fit 1964/66 F100/250 2WD & 1966 F100 4WD Stylesides like they were made for them.
Same exact lamp assy's as 1967/77 Bronco, 1969/74 Econoline.

Bill - Just wanted to say thanks for this info. Was lucky to find it. Am in the process of doing this to my 66! Got some 67 lenses off of EBay and bought some repop buckets from LMC. At least it will keep some of the original look with the up to date requirements.
Cheers,

My 66 f250 4x4 came with 67 tail lights and I thought it would be good to wire the reverse lights.
I purchased an 2 speed rear/overdrive switch and attached it to the gear stick.
I have gotten 2 or 3 questions as to how can a 4x4 have a 2 speed rear?
I tell them, " I didn't want to drill any holes, and like the look".
I have to say that it is very easy to switch on and off.

My engine and trans are out of the truck at the moment, so it should be a pretty easy swap for me.
I'll take some photos this weekend to recap the swap.

Could be wrong, but I believe the switch in the top cover just provides a path to ground to complete the circuit. You still have to provide power to the backup lamps. Definitely a nice addition for those dark mornings and nights and to let others know you are backing up even in daylight. But, LAX, it's hardly OG....Lol.
