Hey Dave,
No I figured that in the last eleven years Ford could bring the MPG numbers up. I have a 2002 F-250 crewcab 2x4 with 5.4L auto with 3.73rear we get 11-14 town, 15-17 highway. So I just figured that with the leaps in technology and all the new SD gasses would be seeing significant improvements.

kitty --

I'm thinking a new SD will get about the same mpg as your '02 did. Keep in mind...the hp, torque, and weight numbers are up in the new models. So...that effects mpg's too.

For highway mpg numbers...the 3.73 in a 4x2 should yield nice numbers...with a light foot.

Good luck...

I think I would be hard pressed to match your 5.4 figures. I now have 1900 miles on it. Did a 20 mile test tow on flat land with the 11,500 lb fifth wheel. One 8 hour trip on interstate with cruise set on 70. Rest is light duty knocking around. My computer reads out at 14.0 overall.

Like said, you will be having a bigger animal under the hood to keep fed.

As far as leaps and bounds forward with technology for nice mpg numbers, I am older than dirt and fail to see any quantum leaps.

However the 6.2 with the 6 speed is a quantup leap forward for pulling when compared to my trusty ole early 99 power stroke.

Got 1400 miles on the '12 and it is amazing the upgrades from the '05 with the V10. Bought this off the lot and it came with 3.73. It runs good and mileage was a 1.5 miles to the gallon better than the V10 but if I ordered a truck I would go with the 4.30's like I had with the V10. The 4.30's would surely make up for the little bit of mileage gain. Overall the truck is great and now if it last as well as the 05 did. The 05 had 428,000 when we parted ways but is still in service with a new owner. Just finished a 600 mile round trip on same roads I usually drive so I got a good comparison of how the truck will do. Love the new tranny with being able to lock out gears.

at what speeds do you plan to tow? freeway or highway? if it were me id look for the compromise like was already said 4:10 if available. I havent had any of the newer 6 speeds on the freeway but I got to imagine at freeway speeds even with a 6 speed a 4:30s gunna have your motor reved up decently high.

I think in the 2012 F 250 the 4.30 was all that was offered - nada on the 4.10

As mentioned, no 4.10s available. Don't forget the new trans has essentially 2 overdrive gears (5th = 0.85:1, 6th -0.67:1).

At 65mph with my 4.30's, I'm at 1900rpm....
