Bought my 1978 F100 (302) last summer, finally getting around to fixing my non-working oil gauge problem. Wire from sender tested good, so I figured just replacing the sender was the best next move considering their low cost. Went to auto shop, looked up new part and they showed me a sender that was much larger (housing) than what was on the truck currently. We both searched all their other options, to no avail. The only senders that looked close enough to work were all for light indicators. We eventually tried one of those which fit, but obviously when started the gauge just made a sweep and went back to starting position (doesn't work). Even looked at LMC, Dennis Carpenter etc. catalogs, and they all indicated I needed the larger sized sender. Which I tried and doesn't come close to fitting. Fuel pump and engine are too close. I know I should probably just install an aftermarket mechanical gauge, but I really want to solve this problem even if. I thought maybe I was wrong with what engine I have, but the 351 and 400 both call for the same model sender. Maybe I'm supposed to have a dummy light and someone switched out the instrument cluster for an older gauge style. All other gauges work fine. I'm at a loss, along with everyone who works at the local parts store. Any help would greatly appreciated!
There is an extension that screws into the block that the sending unit screws into.
NPD has them p/n 9B339-2 $8.95
The large diameter sender is for the gauge panels, the smaller unit is for the warning light panel.
Thanks mike. Checked the part number out and it indicated 1966-1977. Think it will be ok for a '78? Also, have you used these extenders? Seems like it would solve being too close to the fuel pump and engine but would be real close to the oil filter at that point

This is what should have been on your truck to start with. The factory used them to space the sender out enough to clear. The end for the sending unit is tilted at 45 degrees for clearance.
Awesome, thanks mike, you have been so helpful! This was gonna drive me crazy today. I have no clue why the truck doesn't have one, guess it obviously had the wrong sender in there when I got it. Should I get the extender from NPD, even though it didn't indicate my exact year?

Glad to help, yes go ahead and order that one. It will work fine.
