The shortblocks are the same except for the cam which is different but not exactly bigger than the regular production motor and yes it's a flat tappet not a roller, and the Lightning got GT40 heads and intake.... and that's it.
We've got 5 lightnings lol and conaski is right on the cam it's not stock but its also not bigger just a little different...Gt40 all aluminum intake, gt40 heads, headers, and 4:10 gears..
Ok, That is exactly the info I was looking for. I am going to be using a 95 5.8L roller motor with GT40 Heads and intake. So this should be comparable to the lightning motor.
Did the lightning motor have cast, hyper or forged pistons?
As for that I'll have to go and look.. But I'm making my 4x4 96 into a lightning sorta.. 302 block bored 30, gt40'heads and intake, good cam, longtube headers, 4:10 gears, new injectors and pistons..and eventually a supercharger.. So yeah you'll see lightning like performance
I believe all production motors were using Hyper pistons by the mid '90s but I could be wrong maybe they were still cast aluminum, but in any case the L got nothing special.
Thanks Paul, I figured you would know what the deal was. I guess mine will be a bit better than the L. I'm using forged pistons and Sportsman conrods to beef up the bottom end.
