had trouble towing above 55

I have a 97 f350 7.3 five speed I bought a few months back. It is 100% stock all original as can be with 290000 miles. I have towed my boat with it on several occasions which weighs in at about 5000 pounds with no issues, can go 70 all day if wanted. I hooked my 5ver(10000 pounds) up to it today for the first time and towed it about 3 miles to just make sure everything was good. I seemed to be having trouble getting above 55. I will try again in the next day or so cause I just towed it around the block which is 1 mile sections each time, so not really a lot of room to roll it up past 55 before having to slow again. If I do find its having trouble with getting it to continue to accelerate after 55 what do you guys think I need to be looking at? I have put 4000 miles on it so far and dont seem to notice any issues with the truck and this is probaly my 4th or 5th 7.3, but all the others were superdutys.

I believe it has 410 gears in it, it's competent stock. Not a thing has ever been dine to it. The guy I bought it from used it mainly as a commuter pulled very little to not at all.

A bone stock truck will take a little while to get over 55-60 with 10k behind it.

If you think it should be better you could try unplugging the electrical to the MAP sensor and see if it do better. If it does you have a stopped up hose or a bad MAP sensor

Have you changed the fuel and air filter recently? Did you clean the bowl screen? How old is the oil? Measure the fuel pressure at the schrader valve and tell us.

where is the fuel screen? I just changed the fuel filter over the weekend as routine maintence. The oil has 3 or 4k on it almost time to change as I usually change every five.

Take the fuel filter out and inside the fuel bowl on the driver side about a inch down you'll see a 1/4" hole. The screen is in that hole. Cut the cotton off the end of a Q-tip and lightly scrap the screen clean

All good advice from what I can see.

Air and exhaust are always important as well as fuel.

So if you have the kitty on there still, check that last if you dont have luck with any other suggestions, could be a bit plugged up.

Ok I will pull the fuel filter again and check the screen. Yes the kitty is still there but hopefully not much longer.

Been looking into this some more, it appears I have an exhaust leak up high by the turbo by all the soot on the firewall. Thinking maybe the upipes up there, there is no soot down where they connect low. If I pull the turbo which I was going to do anyways to delete the EBPV and put new donuts on there do you guys think they will reseal and also can I do this and not disturb the lower since they are not leaking and be ok?

They should reseal just fine. And there is no gasket down low where the pipes meet the manifolds. The ends are flared and are metal-metal where they meet.

When i did mine i didnt seat them right appearently because They blew out again after a week. Went from 25 lbs boost to 14 lol. It was much easier to unbolt the pipes from both ends.

From both ends you mean just plain take the uppipes off. Eitherway I have to pull the turbo and delete the EBPV that's leaking.

I bought new international up pipes for it, I have been reading people had issues getting the bolts out of the collector when they did thiers. Should I just buy a new collector?

Glad this thread came back up. While towing a truck last week i experienced the same issue. On top of the engine on the valve covers you'll see 2 plugs that go into the valve covers. unplug each one and inspect the pins inside the plug. Check to see if any are burnt/melted. One of mine was and i couldnt get it above 60, floored, downhill. Just something to check.
