08 F350 DRW 6.4

I currently have an 02 F250 with the 7.3. I'm looking at an 08 F350 with the 6.4L. Just wanted to find out how everyone likes theirs. Pros? Cons? Things to be on the lookout for, etc. Thanks for any info you might have.

I came to my '10 F350 DRW 4X4 6.4L from an '01 7.3L Excursion and '01 Silverado 8.1L gas. NO COMPARISON. The 6.4s have so much more power and are much more refined. That being said, here are a few things you should know. The 6.4L is not going to get good fuel mileage. That was fine with me as I bought it to pull, AND THAT IT DOES!! I get around 12.5-13 on a good day empty and around 8-8.5 pulling my high profile 15k pound camper. These trucks need a very strict maintenance regimen. Oil at 5k, fuel filters every 10K and drain fuel separator monthly. Most importantly, use FORD FILTERS. The early 6.4Ls were known to have radiator leaks from a faulty manufacturing process. Take the VIN number to a Ford dealer and have them run an OASIS report on it to see what has been done to the truck under warranty. There are some with problems with the EGRs, but not as common as with the 6.0Ls. You should do oil sampling at least every other oil change, check nitrite levels in your coolant and drive the daylights out of it! They have a regen process to clean out the diesel particulate filter and stop the diesel 'smoke'. If they are out of warranty(up to you if in warranty), and you do a DPF delete and add a programmer, these trucks make CRAZY power and run much more freely. There are lots of guys on here that will chime in an give the in and outs of these trucks. But overall, I love my truck to death!!!!!

What the golfmedic said X2. I would add this: If you are buying or going to own a 6.4L out of warranty you could have a problem that can cost 10 to 12,000 dollars to repair. So, if your money is tight, think hard on it. I don't say that to scare you, just to make you informed. Repairs to these trucks can be very expensive. Hope this is helpful.

Subscribing- I just had to get towed because my third tranny failed me. I use my baby for transporting cars (21k trailer weight) as wel as daily driver. Have had too many problems, well more than my peers and friends on the 7.3 forum, and as much as I don't want another payment, the unreliablity of this truck at 288k is getting frustrating......

I think that's the highest mileage 6.4L I've heard of.

Looking to buy a 6.4

I'm looking to buy an '08 6.4 myself. I love the reviews about the power, etc. Have a friend who has one and loves it. Just concerned the one I am looking at may be one of the "problematic" ones you read about as it was titled several times (according to car fax). Can anyone on here run an Oasis on a VIN?
