Hey guys I am brand new to this forum, but a long time vet to car forums as a whole and to ford vehicles. I'm looking for a truck to pull my svt cobra track car on weekends and double as my daily driver. My neighbor said he would sell me his 05' F-250 for $4500 but it has 230,000 miles on the 5.4 gas motor. I was just wondering if this is something I should go for, basically would you do it if it was your money? I will be driving it 10 or so miles a day then around 200 on weekends. I'm also very mechanical so I wouldn't have a problem changing wheel bearings or putting a new motor in, I'm just wondering if its still a good buy.
here is a link to the craigslist add but I'll try and post up the info too encase the add goes down. 05 f250
It is an 05 f250 superduty 2wd 5.4 8ft bed 228k miles. Almost all highway miles. The truck runs great and has had anual upkeep. Cold AC. It has a few cosmetic flaws but is in overall fair condition. 5500 obo
That's very cheap and yes I would buy it. 5.4 motors are everywhere so replacement isn't an issue. If the truck is clean I say go for it.
Thanks you for the encouragement. I posted up on my cobra forum and everyone was saying they wouldn't touch a truck with that many miles unless it was diesel, so I knew I better just register on a forum specifically for these trucks. The truck is beautiful inside and out and has a tool box and tow package ready to go. You said this was cheap, what do they normally go for with this many miles?
Two different engines, he has a 2V and you are looking at a 3V. 3V's has plug issues and cam phaser issues other than that not bad. '05's are a lot nicer truck then the previous years, $4500 is not a bad price.

I read a bit on this plug issue. Basically they get stuck and need to get pulled out then helicoiled right? Would it be a good idea to try and pull a plug first to see if they are stuck or have been fixed?
The plugs I'm guessing have been done at some point. My advice is let the dealer handle it. They charged me 400 to do my 07 E350. They make an extractor tool to remove the broken tips also. IIRC I think somewhere down the line they added 4 more threads in the head.
Why is he selling it......? For me that's a lot of miles that I don't know about. But for me I wouldn't even be looking at a truck with that kind of mileage so I'm a little biased against it. Plus there are MANY more wearable parts than just a motor. Just be thorough. It looks like it shines nice on the outside, just be sure the working parts shine just the same. Things like brakes alone get pricey. Wouldn't want a $5k price to double with repairs. I only say this as when I bought my beater car I wasn't thorough enough and have dropped some cash into it, but I need it for commuting.
Good luck and just look it over and ask lots of questions. Tricky questions work best to get the real truth!!

Thank you for keeping this thread level headed and playing devils advocate. I agree and the miles are scary which is why I posted up here. Im going to check everything I can such as the brakes all the way around, I'll put a code reader on it, check for and leaks on the motor and trans. I'll do my best to listen for things like wheel bearings, head ticks, vac leaks, and any pullies dying. What are common things to check that go bad on this year truck. Besides pulling a plug to see if it is fused with the head
When I bought my 08 last summer it had a manifold leak and a bad GEM that was replaced under warranty and a bit of me getting a little angry so even low mileage trucks can suffer. I don't know of any common issues besides the plugs. I'd be looking over all the wearables like u-joints, bearings, brakes, exhaust, manifold leaks, general fluid leaks, tires, etc... If you do find Something Im not sure I'd try and use it as a bargaining chip. Can't imagine he'd sell for less and even if he did its still money out of your pocket. But again maybe it's a good truck. Really try to find out why he's selling.
