what if you blew your tranny...

would you fix it? or junk your beloved rig? my tranny blew up for good this morning. i heard a loud bang and it started making the most violent thunking and clattering noises ive ever heard. turns out a broke a tooth on the input shaft gear and some other mumbo jumbo, i didnt catch everything that my guy told me, but he said rebuilding it would not pay off. im getting a brand new tranny from rockland standard gear. its supposed to be "revised" so that it wont have the typical shift fork and other problems the m5od is known for. ANYWAY bottom line im about to dump 1800 bucks into this truck. im getting alot of heat from some of my buddies about it. i mean, i could have gotten a junkie trannie and saved alot, but i dont want to deal with this ever again. justify my repair! since we are all pic *****, here she is

sorry for the long read, i guess im venting a little.

She's still in pretty decent shape. Ask yourself, can I afford to spend another ~$300/month + the extra insurance for a new one? Do you want to go into debt on a new one? If the answer is NO then you've made the right choice.

If the truck is rust free, and that is all that's wrong............fix it. If it's just something else that is wrong, your choice.

How much you spend to fix it is up to you.

If it were mine I would have swapped in a ZF5 from an F250/350. I have spent money on rebuilt auto trannys but I keep my trucks for as long as I can so if I spend a bunch of money on a tranny I'm going to drive the rig until the new trans craps out too.

i thought about swapping a zf5 but i use the truck every day and cant really afford to have it out of commission too long. not to mention, my tranny guy claims the new m5od im installing is a big improvement over the original. the turn around for the new install is about 3 days so il have it back Thursday. i definitely dont want to have payments on a new one. the only rust is one of the fenderwells and its not too bad. you cant put a price on love!

That's why I have two trucks. No matter what it will eventually need to be down for at least a day.

To me it would depend on the condition of all the OTHER stuff that hasn't broken down, particularly the mileage on the engine. If I had 300k on the engine and a lot of other problems I would buy a new/project truck. I have less than 115k on a 96 302 that runs flawlessly and the body, rest of mechanical, interior, are in great shape so I would do the tranny work. 1800 is pennies on the dollar if it is your only REAL issue.

that was probably not the right decision.
odds were, another salvage yard mazda 5 speed would have outlasted the truck for you.(thats what i did,and it did.)
had you a requirement for a "real" updated trans,a salvage yard zf5 would have been cheaper and better than a new updated mazda anyway.
id have to go with your buds on this one.poor choice for the $ spent on the '92 2wd.sorry brother, but you could have had much more, for much less,in about the same time period.

With less than 40k miles on my engine, I would just go out and replace my transmission with a bulletproof new one. My truck simply means too much to me to lose it over a transmission....

From what you've said about the condition of the rest of the truck, and your obvious love for the truck, definitly the right move to spend the $1,800.

The question you have to ask yourself is if you could get another truck that you know as much about, and like as much as this one for the same money.

I look at it this way: Even if I had the truck for just one more year, that would be $150 per month. What could you buy for that kind of payment? Besides that, they don't build trucks like that anymore. A newer one would cost you more to fix.

It is an awfully nice truck. They're probably one of the last trucks that holds together well enough to pass down to your kids.

Money well spent I'd say... Also like others have stated, much cheaper in the long run than making payments on a newer vehicle. That's the way I see it. Which is exactly why I spent the money replacing my engine when it went, and converting the truck to 4wd.
