NEED HELP SHIFT COLLAR SHATTERED! now i cant shift what do i do
hey everybody after i got the 74 460(automatic) warmed up and everything this morning i went to put it in drive and it went all the way to first and then i had a floppy gear-handle and a runaway truck, i had to reach underneath the truck and get it to neutral!
I just now got home from work and tore apart the column finding the internal part of the shift collar(ref. lmctruck pg 48 part 16 in the diagram pn: 43-7352) is all broken from the outer part.
is there anyway i can fix this for now or find another way to shift my truck. I was hoping it was some kind of ferrous metal but its not magnetic so i dont think i have any ability to weld it back into order? I think its either aluminum or magnesium? I really dont think i could JB weld either.

I think they're just cheap pot metal, they don't cost that much just buy another one...until then i guess you could try JB weld...

Yea, you can't order another one until Tuesday, do you have a junk yard that's still open in your area? if not, i'd give the JB weld a shot as a temporary fix.
It's very hard to weld pot metal, at least with any lasting success, the various metals like aluminum, zinc and copper that are used in pot metal have a very low melting point.

thats what i figured i wasn't even gonna try to solder this junk...
i found a friend that had a parts truck but it was for a 78-79 and wont work.
so i just got back from the ace hardware place and he showed me this PC7 jb weldy stuff, they had a beer bottle glued to 50 different things and looked pretty mean so i bought that and some regular jb, im tryin to use a sparing amount in the cracks after scuffing the entire thing real good with scotch-brite and once an hour goes by and thats good and hardened i will comence to pile this stuff on around and make sure its glued good! LOL.

Do you have a nice carpet or floor mat in your truck ? Or is it a builder project with out floor covering ? If there's nothing there to damage, then drill a small hole in the floor right above the shifter arm. Then run a rod though the floor and attach it to the arm. Lift up and push down to shift in to gear. I'v done that a number of times on a builder while i am waiting for a good floor shifter. Of course if it's all finished in side ,then that's not a good idea.___
