LOL, you can hear or read most any number you can imagine. My wife says all men lie about sex and fuel mileage, they just can't help it. I got around a 20% increase. I don't drive it empty enough to get a good reading but towing I went from 7.5-9.5 to 10- 10.5. That's hand calculated and measured often enough that I'm satisfied it's true.
I found my tuner on craigs list for 300 bucks. It's an edge and pretty basic. The "good" stuff is anywhere from 700 to 1200 and you can spend more if you want some custom tunes. Mines an edge racing evolution, but edge quit making off road tuners about a year ago. They said they had figured out that everyone wasn't really using them off road. Duh!!! I think the feds got after them. I also notice that the H&S Black Max seems to be out of stock everywhere. Haven't heard that they quit making them but you can't buy one so it doesn't matter why. The bottom line is the tuners are illegal so the feds could come after anyone selling them. You have to sign a waiver to buy one but I doub't that would fool the judge.
The expense in the diesel is maintainence. it cost a lot to do it and if you don't do it it cost more in repairs. Oil and filter every 5000 miles, fuel filters every 10,000. Coolant maintainence and oil tests. It adds up.
The AFE is one of those things that look cool but really don't do much for you. A lot of people who should know say the stock filter is good up to real high horsepower which if you are interested in economy you don't care about.

I had a PHP which is basically an Edge product with the ability to have custom tunes. The issue I had with it was the tranny would search for a gear because of the increased HP. That was my only issue I had with it. I switched to the minimax last year and other than the screen being a little small, they have a good product
As for Mileage gains, you will get an increase in mileage just from not burning the DPF but it will also give you modest increases in basic consumption. I went from 15 with the PHP and DPF on unloaded to anywhere from 17 to 20 depending on what I was doing with the DPF off and the minimax. 20 is on the highway, unloaded and keep my foot out of it. Above 70 the mileage goes down quickly as well as around town. Loaded down I am happy to be between 11 and 12 mpg but thats at 23,000 lbs and up and down the mountains.

Here's one man's opinion on improving the relaibility of the 6.4 by deleting the DPF. I'm surprised he didn't mention anything about deleting the EGR coolers as well.

I coudn't get it to play but given the title I'd like to. I'm gonna see if I can find it on you tube. The EGRs on the 6.4L don't seem to have a lot of problems. For me, removing them without any signs of a problem is a lot of work or dollats on a project that I will probably have to do reverse to sell or trade the truck.
