2wd transmission pan on 4x4 transmission

Hey guys,

bought a 2wd transmission pan without realizing it for my 4x4 AOD transmission.

Bought the aftermarket for the drain plug.. and I know it's a 0.5 quart less fluid capacity, but would it be ok if I put this pan on my 4x4 transmission with a 2wd filter also?

Otherwise I'm just going to order a deeper capacity pan with drain plug and keep the 4x4 trans filter.

Thanks

It will work OK if you just use the truck like a 2 wheel drive truck and not do any off road 4X4 type stuff.
The deeper pan was for when the truck tips or rocks. Ford has a ground clearance spec and that is why they had to put shallower pans on the 2 wheel drive trucks. Later on, 1999 and newer tucks even the 2 wheel drive trucks had the deeper pans as they now had the ground clearance.
Some larger 2 wheel drive RV had the deeper pan in the early 90's as they had the ground clearance.

Thanks Bill,

I do plan on using the 4x4, mainly for winter. But however I do plan on using the 4x4 for off-roading occasionally. I would probably feel safer using the proper 4x4 pan then.

Yep, just ordered a deep capacity AOD pan, holds 3 extra quarts of fluid.

Now just have to find that shift lever I need... going to some tranny shops out of town on Friday for that..

I hope it was a E4OD deep pan and not a AOD pan.
Make sure you get a matching gasket for it.
If the pan has a newer flat mounting surface you can use a reusable rubber coated steel gasket.
If the it is a older type pan with raised rings around the holes then you have to use a cork gasket or it will leak (pore) ATF out.

Thanks Bill,

Why would I need an E4OD pan? I got a deep AOD pan, this one:

The transmission in my '92 has been replaced with a 4x4 AOD out of a 1990 F150, as part of my 4x4 conversion.

I just bought a Fel-Pro gasket, it's black, I don't think it's a steel gasket?

Should I be getting a re-usable, like this one? The pan says it comes with a gasket, I would sure hope it's a re-usable, for the price I paid for the pan.

I am sorry I thought I read you had a E4OD in your first post and all the information I post above was for the E4OD.
I was also thinking that a 1992 4X4 with a 5.0L would have a E4OD.
So sorry.
I have a good memory but it just does not last very long.

Not sure why you would need it.
You have a drain plug and the new filter will last over 100,000 miles so you will not be changing the filter again.

Yeah, true. If I ever change the fluid again I can just pull the plug, so much easier then removing and re-sealing the pan.

Can't wait until I get this new pan, my tranny pan leaks about a 0.5 quart/day right now. Has a bucket sitting under it whenever it's parked.
