where to tap for 12v for my choke

I don't have a good wiring diagram, the ones on the internet I am finding are hard to read. But anyway any opinions on ign switched 12v to tap into that is close to the carb?

Truck is a 1977 f100 2wd 400m, installing barry grant road demon carb.

There is a wire hanging from the firewall with a plug on it. right about the heater to center of firewall. I believe it also goes to the hi idle on the otherside of carb.

The "S" terminal on the alternator is the factory location.

Thanks, I might rewire it later, but it is working fine now. The wiring is a terrible mess anyway, so I want to put in a new harness later.

Courious, are you saying the other end of the plug goes to the "S" or all 5 of my trucks were re-wired from previous owners.

Thanks

I believe they were hooked up to the alternator so they would only send power to the choke when the engine is running. I assume they did this just in cases someone had the ignition on and the engine off for an extended period of time the choke would still function when the engine was started. I hooked mine up to a oil pressure switch that I installed under the oil pressure sender. Good luck

I was thinking of that possibility but I figured it shouldn't be that big of a problem. Maybe when I do the 3g alt swap.

The factory set-up had a white wire w/ black trace run from the "S" (stator) terminal on the alternator to the automatic choke terminal on the carb. The output of the stator is AC not DC voltage, if you measure it you'll see ~6-7 volts. From the factory the electric part is an assist to the exhaust heat to open the choke while on aftermarket carbs are 100% electric.
I've heard from several people who have hooked the aftermarket carb up to the factory location and report no problems with choke operation. This is how I have mine (390 4V) hooked up but I can't report on the choke because I haven't started it yet.

Here is a pic of the conector on my truck. The po cut and added the red wire. I put it on my Edelbrock choke and it worked great.
