74 F250 Extended Lug Nuts to Reach Studs?

I'm trying to mount a set of new tires on my 74, but when I took the old ones off and put the new wheels on, the studs are too short (see picture).

No wheel on:

New wheel/tire on, studs are short:

What are my options? Can I get lug nuts that reach the studs? Is that safe?

Thanks for your help.

Those wheels require shank style lug nuts that go through the holes and take up the gap between the stud and the inside diameter of the hole. They look like this.

<a href="http://s742.photobucket.com/albums/xx65/Fordworth/?action=view&amp;current=2012-08-24_22-48-33_421.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i742.photobucket.com/albums/xx65/Fordworth/2012-08-24_22-48-33_421.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

However, you will probably run into another problem like I did several years ago when I ran the same wheels on my truck. Your wheel studs are 1/2" while the holes in the wheels appear to be big enough for 9/16" studs. That means that the smaller lug nuts won't completely fill the mounting holes in the wheels and the wheels won't pilot properly causing them to feel like they are seriously out of balance.

Here's one on my 68 Cougar with 15" wheels that are drilled for 1/2" studs. (Same slotted mags, BTW) There looks like there is a lot less space to fill than in your pictures.

That helps, thank you! How did you fill the space when you mounted the same wheels on your truck?

Measure the diameter of the holes and see if one of these would work. They have a bigger OD than most. They're pretty spendy, though. More than the wheels are worth.

The Gorilla #75187 lug nuts are the correct fit for your aluminum slotted mags.

They have the correct 1.000" shank length and .740" shank diameter to properly fit your wheel.

Be certain to buy the correct part number, Gorilla also makes the same lug nut in a .750" shank length and .685" shank diameter #73187, while these will "work" the wheel will not be properly centered.

correct: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Gorilla-75187-Chrome-Duplex-Mag-Lug-Nuts-1-2-in-x-20-RH-/190710150826?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories &hash=item2c6735f6aa&vxp=mtr

incorrect: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Gorilla-73187-Chrome-Std-MAG-Lug-Nuts-1-2-in-x-20-RH-/200809890220?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories &hash=item2ec133c1ac&vxp=mtr

You can also buy these locally at most parts stores.

I picked up a lug nut from Les Schwab this afternoon, and it has about a 1" shank, but as Fordworth predicted, the shank width is too narrow.

I'm going to order a set of these and make sure they fit.

Like you said, a "Lug Nut Shank Diameter" of 0.740 looks like it should be snug!

Here is the mounting hole measurement:

Do the hex end of those lug nuts take a 13/16" or 7/8" socket?

7/8" Hex size. Will that work, with a washer?

Absolutely. Bigger is better since they have to fill a large hole. Lugnuts for 9/16" studs generally have a 7/8" or 15/16" hex.

Just realized you were asking about the ones from Schwabs. Those take 13/16, but the shank isn't wide enough. But the ones I just ordered (these) take 7/8.

You need the correct shank diameter though, your wheels lug hole should be 3/4" correct?

Can you "burn an inch" on the tape measure and snap another pic?

The Gorillas with a 7/8" hex measure just under 3/4" diameter at the shank (.740")

I'm not sure what the Les Schwab lug nuts measure out at...

Yes, wheel lug hole is 3/4". Here is the new pic:

The Schwab lug is 5/8.

The .740" shank on the Gorillas should work fine in the 3/4" lug hole, correct?

Thanks!

Looks like we're stepping on each others toes here....the 13/16" lug nuts have an undersized shank diameter, at least in reference to your application.

You want the the 7/8" lug nuts which will have the correct shank diameter for your wheel.
