Is there a way to ID the motor
and the truck it came out of? I just bought a 2002 F150 w/200K miles on it. I was told the motor and trans was put in 20K ago, and they had 60K on them at that time. I bought the truck from the second owner. He told me the first owner was a corporation. They have a small fleet of vehicles. The truck the motor came from was rear-ended and totaled at 60K miles. The company bought the truck from the insurance co. and pulled the motor/trans. It sat in their warehouse for a time. When my truck reached 180K, for whatever reason, they did the swap. I thought if I could ID the engine, and match it to a vehicle VIN I could get a CarFax and see when it was totaled. Since I got the story second hand (from the second owner) I would like to try to verify as much of it as I can.

Can't remember if the sticker on the D. side valve cover has a vin or not, probably not though. It will have a build date IIRC, which can be months before that of the truck but should be around the same time frame. Sticker is on the lower side towards the back, mine never came off in 250K miles. '01 engine I got also still had its original sticker.

You might be able to get that info from a dealer. I have found that the parts department is best to get that kind of information, if they are not too busy.
