Just thinking of another preventative maintanance thing to do
Well the truck is running great right now. Just finished the ball joint's install last week. Next, it's time to flush the coolant and replace with new. I was thing of changing from the Ford gold to Rotella ELC. At $25.00 a gallon, it's still cheaper then the gold. Any thoughts on the Rotella?

Is it silica free? That would be first thing I'd ask. I went with CAT's ELC for $13 a gallon. Got it through my local CAT dealership; there is both concentrate and 50/50 premixed. May have to stock order the concentrate if it's a smaller dealership (branch office)...which is what I had to do. They had the 50/50 sitting on the shelf.

This is what it says about the coolant.
Test proven coolant with over 150 million kilometres of fleet testing - protects all cooling system components in diesel motors
Heat transfer is about 8% better than conventional heavy duty, silicate-containing coolants
Capable of up to 1,000,000 km or 12,000 hours
No regular Supplemental Coolant Additives (SCA's) required
Improved water pump seal life due to low dissolved solid levels
Excellent, long-term corrosion protection of all cooling system metals including aluminum, brass, cast iron, steel, solder and copper
No silicate dropout or gel formation during use or storage
Can be used for top-up of cooling systems containing conventional coolants
Carries ASTM D 3306, ASTM D 4985, ASSTM D 6210, TMC RP 329 and TMC RP 338 approval
Available in concentrated and premix - 4 L size

I just bought the CAT ELC - it was $23/gal for the concentrate - 50/50 was $11. They also sold me a CAT cooling system flush that they recommend before switching to ELC that is similar to VC-9 (they actually claim it is a quick flush - takes 90min and does both restore and restore+ type cleaning) - it was $34/gal.
You guys are always so scientific - I went with the CAT ELC because it is red (and my friend just got it).
