I bought a cable from Autozone for $30, special order. I think the problem is the interior handle assembly is warn and not pulling the cable far enough. If you do a little extra jerk on the interior handle it might open, but that's how I've gone through three or four of them so far. I currently have the handl eout so I have to roll down the window to get the door open. Also, the metal where my handle mounds to the door has torn from said jerking, so I need to reinforce that. I'm thinking about shimming the cable catch with a small shim or two to see if that fixes it.

i dont lock my doors cause if someone wants in then they are getting in anyway and i dont want to have to replace what they took and my window or whatever they broke to get in too. i used a small elastic cord with metal hooks on the end to hold up the lock actuator and took out the latch mechanisim and put the lock rod into the hole where the cable was attached. then put it back through the hole in the top of the door where it originally was. now the rod pushes the lever the cable used to pull down to open the door.

I did the exact same thing. I used a rod from an anderson window I had laying around, and have a stubby screwdriver handle on the end so it doesnt stab your elbow. Now every time I try to get out of my dads truck I lock the door with my elbow out of habit.

I like the idea, unfortunately the pictures just seem a little blurry to me, but I definitely get the concept of what you did. It's what I was thinking of doing, except I was thinking about shimming where the cable end sits in the latch assembly.

I've seen worn parts where the handle attaches to the cable or stretched cables cause that. I tried to buy a cable from the dealer... Pall they sold was al complete cable with the mechanism the handle attaches to. If you don't mind spending some $$ that might be your best bet.
I've sold a ton of 'em over the years...
