79 auto tilt column, upper bearings

Been a long time since I posted, but here goes.

Found these threads

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/7...ng-column.html

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...r-bearing.html

From these threads,

F23Z3517B.. LOWER Steering Column Bearing / F23Z3517B replaced: E1FZ3517B & C7SZ3517D.

MSRP: $17.98 // FTE sponsor Y2KFORDPARTS.COM price: $12.95 / Y2K = MILLENNIUM FORD in Seattle (Burien) WA

Fits: 1973/79 F100/250 4WD // 1978/79 Bronco // ALSO used as the upper steering column bearing on 1978/79 F100/350's with tilt wheel.

--------------
Lower bearing goes to D4AZ-3D651-A = tilt wheel LOWER flange. Is this what U mean by the lower housing??

Bearings: C7SZ-3517-C .. Upper / E1FZ-3517-B .. Lower = replaces C7SZ-3517-D.

---------------

D4AZ3D651A .. Lower Flange, Use with Tilt Wheel -Obsolete- I haven't looked around for this yet...

C7SZ3517C .. Upper Bearing / MSRP: $39.98 / ftepartsguy.com: $28.79

E1FZ3517B .. Lower Bearing / MSRP: $10.37 / ftepartguy.com price: $7.78

--------------

First part says "F23Z3517B replaced: E1FZ3517B" and "it is ALSO used as the upper steering column bearing on 1978/79 F100/350's with tilt wheel."

Second part says "E1FZ3517B .. Lower Bearing" which we know from above was replaced by F23Z3517B, but one calls it upper, one calls it lower.

Finally, C7SZ3517C is supposed to be the upper tilt bearing, which is the smaller of the two, but it is 4 times the price (curious since most times larger bearings are more money).

Just looking for clarification on part numbers and which bearing is which, for the two bearings in the upper part of tilt wheel.

Are you planning on rebuilding your column?
If so could you do a step by step? i have a tilt that has to much movement where it tilts, and i would like to get it fixed.
The only thing stopping me from doing so, is that i heard its a real pita to put the column back together.

Thanks very much for the update on the numbers. Prices are even cheaper than I found, and I thought I had found smokin deals.

The hardest part seems to be getting the spring that creates pressure on the tilt mechanism and getting the 2 tilt pivot pins back in, all at the same time. I'm still in teardown mode, but here are some pics I found (not mine).

One side seems substantially more worn than the other and either pin is only real loose on the one side of flange, so I don't think it is the pins that are worn (plus pins are steel, flange is alum). Looked @ Bronco GY and Dennis Carpenter for the flange, but no luck. Probably no longer available, but if you get a chance, can you get me PN's for the flange and pins?

My other thoughts if flange is not available were to

a. knurl the ID of flange
b. rough up the edges of pins

and/or

c. use an epoxy on pins like this.

3M Automix Panel Bonding Adhesive, 08115, 200 mL cartridge-Shop 3M

Thanks again

Thanks again.

The tilt positioning spring is fine though.

I was looking for the (aluminum) upper tilt flange shown in pic above.

At least that is what ford calls it in the manual

Ford factory truck repair manual. Calls both upper and lower tilt flanges.

and of course there is also an "upper flange" . Lot of "flanges" going on there

The truck repair manual calls the lower plastic encased bearing a "cap", go figure........
That is what you said the parts manual calls a "Flange (Steering Column Tube Lower)", yes?

Thanks for the link to the CD parts manual, got one on order.........

OK, got the parts CD, 73-79 Ford truck Series 100/500.

Under the illustrations, section 35, Page 27 lists

Steering column with A/T- Tilt Wheel
1978 E100/350.

Part in question yields number 3511

Crossing over to the text only section yields
PN D5AZ-3511-B, FLANGE (STEERING COLUMN TUBE)
for 78 E100/350 w/ tilt wheel

Searched on that PN and came up with this thread from 2008.

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/7...ng-column.html

Seems it was obsolete and not available from any source back in 2008, so
probably not available now. But if you could take a quick look on that PN
again for me, would appreciate it.

The pro's at finding parts will produce better data but a google search with that part number came up with this link.

D5AZ-3511-B | RearCounter.com | 4 found at 2 sellers

I would think LMC or others would have these also.

Thanks, found those from a google search and have
price requests in to both vendors.

Course ND seems to usually find the cheapest price too, if avail from any dealer.

No go on LMC, would be the shaded part between numbers 10 and 11

http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/fc/full.aspx?Page=49

LMC, MAC's and JBG all seem to have the same parts and are missing the same parts
(in tilt steering assemblies anyway). Must all have access to the same vendors and/or
the same old stock.

Thanks again. Got a price on 2 of them, not nearly as bad as I was expecting.

Guess I should have guessed that on the car parts manual, as my registration for all my broncs has always been "wagon". Probably order the car parts manual too, heck they are cheap enough.
