How important is a water seperator?

I noticed the other day that mine on the firewall had been bypassed. I Thought I had read that you could switch the fuel filter out with a combo from a newer year. Is that right.

Is it really needed. I know water does not combust or compress but how often is there water in the fuel? Is it from crappy gas stations?

The filter on my 93 has a built in water seperator. You could look for a fuel filter water combo to replace your fuel filter.

I never seem to get any water out of them and I drive two idi trucks - one with the earlier system on the firewall and the other with the late model on the fuel filter.

Maybe I'm just lucky? I'm sure the place you get your fuel and climate play a factor into this.

I have been running my 6.9 for about 7 years now with the water separator removed and have not had problems (with water in the fuel), but I live in Arizona, so the climate probably makes it less-necessary here. That said, my rebuild will be using the fuel filter set-up with built-in separator from a 94 IDIT engine. Ford put those separators on there for a reason, and I would rather it was in place as long as it is not a chronic source of air intrusion.

the question asked in the thread title should be "how important is water when it goes through my injectors/IP/motor"
