wont turn over

my 01 auto ocasionally wont turn over.at first it would seem if i pull up on shifter handle or put it in neutral it would turn over but thismorning that didnt help either.i was thinking the transmiision sensor but neutral didnt hel0p eithe0r today? you can hear a single click under dash but nothing.also on some ocassions you turnkey to start and theres a delay till it turns over maybe 2-5 seconds.soo maybe starter relay on fender well?
sorry for the long post.

Maybe a silly question but did you check your battery connections?
Do you have full power?

yes i did.first time it happened i cleaned them and starter conections.when it cranks it cranks fast so i think batteries would be good.you can start it without a hitch for a week or two(i dont drive it every day).then it will act up.the thing that gets me to is the delay once in a while.i could always move shifter at first so i thought it was the switch on tranny but neutral didnt work today.i just tried it 4 times since i got home and fired right up.

That is weird....
I would say (and I'm no expert) that it is sounding like the starter relay like you suspect.

Why not just jump the starter from the battery using a jumper cable? If it cranks, you could pretty much bet it is the solenoid or transmission gear switch.

Is your shifter loose or sloppy? You may have loose shifter bolts, pretty common really.

They can be tough to find the first time but here is a pic for reference to help locate the torx screws.
