Anyone else think this is a stupid idea? Why would they do that? That's like Dodge discontinuing the Grand Caravan. They're both stupid ideas.

The TLDR version: Fuel Economy. CAFE standards. The transit with the V6 ecoboost will gain ~25% fuel economy through weight reduction, aerodynamics and minor engine trickery. As the best selling full sized van for ~20 years running, that would quickly boost their overall fleet average.
