I have a 1987 F-250 with a 6.9 diesel and I need to replace the starter. It cranks slow and is hard to start. The battery's and wiring check out fine. I understand a geared starter would be the way way to go. Can you guys recommend which one to go with. I also have read they can be a pain in the butt to change!! Any pointers would be great. Thanks

 

Get a mitsubishi gear reduction starter with the lifetime warranty from autozone. Mine was like 136 bucks 2 months ago.

 

That's what I got and it's never started better!! I mean hit just hit the starter and it's running!!

You should already have a geared type starter, so just get a replacement for it. The one on my 86 failed to the point of almost not starting. Put a new one one, almost seemed like it turned as easy as a blower fan...
