What tranny should I use? 75 f100 with a 360

Hey guys,

I just picked up a really clean 2wd 1975 f100 from a rancher in western NE for only $650. It's got a 360 and a 3spd auto at the moment. The tranny needs to be replaced. What are my options? It's got a column shifter at the moment.

BTW, I'd be interested to sell this truck. I couldn't pass up the deal for as little as I paid. It's still in NE. I live in Northern Colorado. PM if you're interested.

Thanks!!

Easiest and most practical is to replace or rebuild the 3 speed automatic, which should be a C6. All aluminum case, integral bell. Billions served.

Is it a column shifted manual? If it is i would replace it with an np435. There easy to find and since your trying to sell it i think it would appeal to most buyers a bit more then a "three on the tree"

Right now is has a column shifted 3spd. It's a cruise-o-matic. I'm not certain but after trying to research things on my own, it sounds like real old technology. Are there any direct replacements for this old tranny that don't involve a lot of mods?

It didn't come with a cruise-o-matic from the factory. It should be a C6. Put a C6 back in it.

That's interesting because the auction that I reference includes the original window sticker for the truck and if references a cruise-o-matic.

The 360/390 doesn't share it's transmission bolt pattern with anything more modern or newer. You would need an adapter to mate anything to it besides the c6 as far as auto transmissions go. They are major $$$$$$$. Trust me, I've looked! Earthquake is right...stick with the c6

Any 2wd C6 will bolt right up as long as the bellhousing fits an FE series motor

Window sticker may call it a "cruise o matic", but by about 1970, the only auto trans used in a pickup behind a 360/390 was the C6.
It is old technology. But, it works great. Tough as a boot. The only drawback to a C6, is the lack of OD. Did I mention they are tough? One of the stoutest automatic trans to ever find it's way into a car/pickup, bar none.

Okay, so in theory I should be able to rebuild or replace the tranny and keep with column shifter? Thanks for the info, this is helpful. Any other parts or mods I'll need to consider? Is there a good chance the crossmember will be the same?

There is a 100% chance you can rebuild or replace the trans with the exact model which will bolt in with no mods what so ever. Shop around, like I said, billions served.
