I have a 2001 Expedition, 5.l 4wheel drive, i am experiencing a loud noise and loss of power under load... the loud noise is similar to that if a u joint had play loud grinding clunking noice or play in the drive shaft.
this is what the shop has diagnosed
all 8 plugs and coils were replaced and are ok
dropped drive shaft, u joints are ok
left year axel seal and bearing needs replacing
diff cover is leaking
tranny serviced and scanned, its ok.
cant find anything else wrong with car... anyone have any ideas of what else i can have looked at...
Yes they replicated the noise during a test drive...which lead them to look at the drive shaft, u joints, differential etc... all looked ok, they said its due to wear and tear of the vehicle, but i only hve 200K kms on it... they scanned the transmission to see if their were any codes..
Sounds like the pinion bearings in the rear differential have worn and need to be replaced. With the rear axle leaking, perhaps the fluid level dropped low enough to cause premature bearing wear.
I had a violent "shudder", like grinding, on accelerating fro a stop with a load. Turned out to be the rear differential. It had been leaking slowly. My 2000 XP has a limited slip diff, and it was kicking in. Refilled with fluid, including friction modifier, and theproblem was all cleared up. Might work for you?
thanks, shudder sounds right, i have it when i push the gas hard, and when i am crusing its gone, but as soon as i go on an incline and push hard i get the shudder noise,,,almost a slipp, as if my tranny is slipping..
That sounds a lot like what I experienced. Nice thing is, it's cheap to find out. DIY, it's $30 in fluid and parts. But many garages have rear diff service specials - drain, replace gasket, and refill, including friction modifier, for in the region of $75 - I decided the $45 was well worth a day lying in the slush in my driveway in March.
