You should be able to buy the parts to fix the carb for WAY less then that . Not only that rebuilding a carb is easy .
I would go to the store and buy a rebuild kit for the carb and the choke assembly and have fun with your brother saving money !

Waste of cash. Buy the generic mechanical choke linkage for ten bucks and have a push pull choke. a monkey could set one up.
You would be better off buying a new aftermarket edelbrock carb then messing with that old one. There are parts of a carb you simply can't "rebuild"

Ok I looked at the carb last night (2bbl off a 1979 f-150 4x4 351M) and it looked pertty simple to do. But that worries me, is it really simple or am I just kidding my self? What all needs to be replaced in a rebuild? I know for sure the vacuum choke (with electric assist??) is bad and the power valve is bad (had gas in it). So what else do I change?? Any help would be apreciated. I took some pictures of it on the truck and can post the in my gallery if that would help. Thanks!
ps. I am very mechanical, I just have never worked on carbs!

Buy a hi-quality carb kit and follow the instructions step-by-step. When you pick it up, bust it open and read thru the WHOLE thing to make sure you have ALL the tools before you head home. You may need some specific drill bits to use as gauges.

You shouldn't have any trouble. Just tear the carb off the intake and do all the work with the carb on a cookie tray of something so that nothing can roll across the table onto the floor.
you can do it, just make sure that your screw driver fits those jets just right, they're brass. I might suggest getting one of those sets of screwdriver bits, so you will have the perfect one.
