Removal of Super Duty lighted mirror covers
Ok I got this because when I was looking for a how to the only thing I found was missing the photos. You will need 2 smaller flat blade screwdrivers a heat gun pliers.
You start by moving the mirror all the way out on one corner and reaching in and lifting the small tab (see photo) there are 3 in the 06. I started on the lower right corner and worked my way around. As you lift each tab you push with the other screwdriver to move the cover away from the mirror. You can see the tab in the second photo. Once you get all sides loose be careful about the small plug that is for the turn signal and running lights(looks like a computer hard drive plug) Once you get the cover off them. clean the dirt and junk out. Lay the cover on it's back and squeeze the 2 "V" shaped points that hold the light into the back. A little heat can help here. If you have a new lamp you may not need to heat on reassembly. If you are going to reuse the lamp then it may be loose and you just heat the tabs a bit and wedge them back out to hold it in place. Once it cools you can remove the tool that you used to hold it. Reinstall the plug and snap it all back together.
The reason I did this was to see just how much work I am in for when I de-chrome the truck
BTW if you pull the mirror all the way off like I did it is a bit of a pain to get the adjusters back into the motor seals.
Enjoy and I hope this helps someone

I found a few that said there were some photos
but the person had deleted there off-site photo
hosting files. That is why I thought I would do this
I am planning on de-chrome my truck. I really don't like chrome.
Anyone know of a retailer for replacement mirror covers?
I am looking for ones I can paint to match the truck color.
Thanks

is that real chrome or plastic dipped chrome?
if real chrome, I might take them off your hands if you want to sell
if plastic dipped, take some sandpaper (fine grit, 300 ish?) and rough up the chrome surface. clean, paint to whatever color you want.
mirror covers are pretty easy to paint. just give it a good adhesion surface first

I had the LEDs in for a while and was not happy with the way it made hot spots
(Hot spot as in a bright point of light) and so I went back to the lamps. I used the
Sylvania 73LL lamp 14V@1.1W. Nice and bright and well spread over the cluster.
On the turn signal lamps in the mirror. When you get the cover off. Take a volt meter
and see if you getting power. They are LEDs and should not go bad like an incandescent
lamp will. It could be a bad plug in the mirror or in the door. If you don't have the cover
off yet I would start inside the door. It's very easy to take the panel off and remove the
moisture barrier. here is a Youtube on how to take the door panel off.
If the sticky stuff on the moisture barrier has given out when you go to reinstall duct tape works well.
