Ideas for an improvised press

Finally getting around installing the 10.5 Sterling 3 pinion LS. Got a new clutch pack and lubricants sitting on my bench ready for the swap.

Thing is, there aren't many shops around me that can press off and press on the bearings from the 10.25 to the 10.5 carrier while I wait or even the same day. My truck is my DD.

Has anyone improvised any presses ? I was thinking my 3 ton floor jack would work but, I really don't have anything strong enough to jack up against, maybe the frame of my truck ? I DO NOT want to beat on the bearings as you all know the consequences of doing so.

Any ideas ?

I'd get new bearings, then put the carrier in the freezer for a while. Put the bearings in the sun for the same time to get them hot, then slide them on.

Hmmm, supposed to be 90* by Sat.. That's awesome. I'll have to stack the meat against the split carrier to hide it from the wife

Of course, I'll wrap them in plastic LOL

Thank you

You could also get some nitrogen from a welding shop and put the parts in a bucket and run the nitrogen in it. That gets them really cold.

I have a friend with a home made press that used to use a floor jack.

It was made from i-beams and was adjustable. Used it when I pressed new bearings on my 8.8 carrier.

When I was a kid
I put a Harley ring gear in my mOms oven and the flywheel in the freezer. It works.

When I did my lockers I spent the $120 or whatever and bought a 12 ton press from HF: 12 Ton Shop Press

Sure, it's not free or really cheap, but if you do stuff for yourself, you'd be amazed how handy that press is. It's paid for itself over and over...

I got that same press from them Jim. I use it quite a bit too. Heat and cold is the way I used to do it, now with the press its so much nicer.
