Anyone converted an XL to an XLT more or less can tell me how viable that is price wise and work etc? I'm having plenty of trouble finding the exact combo I want, but if I just take an XL it will make my search alot easier. I really would rather have power windows (i could actually give a crap.. but being able to open my passenger window is nice lol), and I NEED that 40/20/40 seat with the cupholders... my life will not be right without one.. I actually like the rubber floor mat of the XL though lol. Any other differences? I imagine the XL gets screwed out of cruise or an adjustable steering wheel? ... def want that too..
I see the seats on ebay, even the door panels and stuff, I dont know how hard converting to power windows would be though. Is everything a pain in the ***? Do i need to drill holes to get the new seats in or is it already setup to take it?
Seats all swap. You can fit anything from 1999-2013 in there.
You can install cruise control by getting the correct steering wheel and 5 minutes at dealership for programming
Power windows can be retrofitted using aftermarket kits for about $150 a window
Power locks can be installed for maybe $50. You won't have a factory clicker though. If you want remote unlock, you'll have to install an alarm like Viper or Code Alarm
You can "make" an XL into a XLT fairly easily. Just have to be creative and do some legwork for good deals. There is a thread in the 04-08 F-150 section with detailed directions on this project. It won't be 100%, but it'll get you through the rougher spots and give you some ideas
Are you buying new? Compare the package price of XL vs just upgrading a few $$$ for the XLT. It might be worth just that little bit more
I'd love to buy new but I have a 10k or preferably less price range. I had a 2002 XLT, SuperCab, Short Bed, 5.4, Manual trans all lined up... slipped away.. it was nice
I want that same combo though but, for the last month and a half it seems alot more likely I'm going to find an XL if I do come across it again. So far I keep coming across long beds, and I've even been tempted todo that but I dont want to deal with the parking hassle.. my 94 reg cab long bed barely makes it around here lol.
So that doesnt sound too bad price wise, and it would be better if I just secure the darn truck in the config I want when I find it... I wont pass up an XL l guess :P
Info on the cruise control steering wheel swap, all I need is a steering wheel with buttons and everything else is there and in place??? I have an 2005 XL, and its not to big of a deal to me but I am in the market for a new steering wheel, the previous owner looks to took a hatchet to mine haha..
I had power locks added for about $75 when I bought my remote start alarm.
I am thinking about the possibility of power windows getting a set of XLT door panels and use the XLT factory switches along with an aftermarket "universal" power window kit..
I would be very nice to have the ability to roll down the passenger side window...
I changed from vinyl floor to carpet and I already had a 40/20/40 cloth seat..
My 2005 XL came factory w/ everything you want except power windows/locks. I actually prefer everything manual so I don't want to switch. The cloth 40/20/40 seats and cruise control were factory for mine and I've actually seen XL trucks w/ factory power windows and locks as well so keep looking and don't automatically dismiss XL packages. These were all 2005 and up though so year may have an effect on what options were available.
What a hoot! In '02 l had to search high and low for a bone-stock F250 4x4 5.4 Crew-Cab Short-Box. Dealer had one available that someone ordered with a tow package and camper package, then decided he didn't want it. I got it at base price, options thrown in free. Industrial stength, no-frills interior (my tilt wheel came with).
the 40/20/40 conversion would look the same as an 40/20/40 seat, nothing special... I have the 40/20/40 in my regular cab (came that way factory) and I love it, my last truck had a bench seat and its really nice to have the fold away arm rest/center console area
I'm keeping an eye on this thread since I'm trying to do my 99 SD crew cab XL I'm trying to do the same seats upgrade, power option if possible, and cruise would be nice.
working in my engine bay i notice alot of wire left around so im assuming they are for these features, so wouldn't it be possible to just get lets say a door with all the power options and hook things up and pop fuses where they need to go?
I've cash flowed a "cosmetic" XLT conversion on a leftover 2008 F250 I received a good deal on ($23.9k).
Mine was a quad cab 4WD with a nice group of options (5 speed auto, camper package, PW/PL, tilt, CC, power mirrors, sliding rear window, chrome bumpers, jeweled headlamps, integrated tow controller, SOTF, cloth interior).
Mostly through e-bay or a local wrecking yard - I added skid plates, a chrome grille, tow mirrors, running boards, 18" factory alloy rims, and a 6 CD radio & extra speakers.
On my wish list: a tan cloth split bench front seat, 4.30 gears with a Detroit TT rear, keyless entry, and some OEM type fender flares.
I was lucky to have the power set-up and most XLT options. Most items were plug n' play (tow mirrors/ 6 CD). Be careful with the tow mirrors - if you have power paddle mirrors - get the power heated with TS (not the power extend/fold), the plugs will plug in but won't work properly.
They made quite a few high optioned XL's, search for one with the power options to make some additions (power tow mirrors are nice) easier.
They now make aftermarket tow mirrors that cost about 1/3 of the factory ones. I never figured out why they (OEM) are so costly.
I added cruise control, fog lights, marker/ID lights, redundant audio, a CD player, the AUX-IN jack, and have plans to upgrade to the aero headlamps.
The bear of a project is going to be adding factory RKE... yes, it can be done, as every 2008 has the RKE module, albeit some are disabled in the build data. The trick is to find the VIN for a vehicle set up like you want, and download the "as built" data from Ford. Then upload the data to your pickup to make it think it is a different pickup. My problem is that I have to find a Regular Cab, V8 Gas, manual transmission with power windows/locks... I can always re-add the brake controller, curise control, and auxillary audio... but the engine, transmission, and door config are not enableable parameters.
