Differential cover

I have a 1999 F250 diesel 4x4 with manual tranny. Differential cover is rusting to the point it is paper thin. Any tips or tricks in replacing this 12 bolt hole cover? The shop manual says use sealant as a gasket. They sell cover gaskets. Anybody know if a preformed cover gasket is OK to use?

Been reading up on this myself and I think most people use the silicone. Very few problems. Not many problems with the gaskets either but moreso than the silicone.

I've used both silicone and the gasket with no difference. My cover is starting to get moist near the bottom I found a used cover on eBay from California ( no rust) for 50.00. I don't really care for the aftermarket look wich is why I went that route. Oh also no matter what you will still have to scrape the goo off from a gasket it silicone

Well for pretty much the same money you can get an aluminum finned rear diff cover that Ford puts on the '08+ trucks. It should fit your 2000 if it has the 10.5 rear. I just bought one and will install when I make time for it. Part # is 8C3Z-4033-A

Mine look's about like Bill's did in that ^^^ link. I'm going with the factory aluminum one and black RTV, unless you tow boats and are sticking your read diff under the water while it's hot, there's really no need for a drain plug in the cover or a gasket that doesn't need a little cleaning when it comes off.

I would use The Right Stuff instead of regular RTV/silicone. It works much better and it can be used immediately, no waiting for it to cure like regular RTV/silicone.

Thats what I used on the last 4 diff covers I did. Sets up nice and firm like the OE sealant and no leaks.

The Diff cover did this on my 05 F350's 10.5..I was gonna get a 08+ diff cover at the time but instead went with just a plain old black stock cover. The ford dealer gave me this sealant meant for something on 7.3 diesel. and it sealed it up great! However the motorcraft diff fluid is like 20 bucks a quart..worth it though I guess

Not really. Mobil 1 or Amsoil is just as good if not better at half that price. I don't think the Motorcraft stuff has the LS additive in it either, you have to buy that separately. I know Mobil 1 already has it added and I'm pretty sure Amsoil does too.
