I Wanna Build A 6.9!

This is a repost. I posted it in the 92-96 forum but I will prolly get more answers here lol.

I have a 1992 F250 w/ a 460, auto tranny, and 4wd. I have always liked the 6.9L. Not sure why? I guess its just the nastalgic part of it! I like my 460 in terms of power. Itll flat out HAUL! If I put the time and effort into a 6.9L, Id want it to make more power than my 460. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 450 ft lbs. Im not sure what all thatd entail though? A simple turbo? Internal work? Will I have to swap out trannies? I know the E4OD came on diesels but do they use different flywheels and such? Will my front/rear end handle it and are 3.55 gears enough? The 6.9 isnt exactly "popular" so I should be able to pick one up at a decent price. How much do you guys think itll cost to build it to "respectable"? Thanks guys! Any info is helpful info!

450ft / lbs just takes a turbo and a good IP. It will take alot more work than that to keep up with a 460 empty though. Do some searchin and find racinNdrummin and NMB2's build threads (cant remember the name) and that will get you going in the right direction. Not sure what it costs to rebuild a 6.9... i know we had around 5k into our 7.3, but that included IP, injectors, GPs and controller, turbo rebuild and SMF conversion.

parts / machine work. Swallowed a valve. I think we sleeved all 8, cant remember though. They can be rebuilt for much cheaper im sure, especially a 6.9, if it even needs rebuilt.

Lol they are notorious for running forever. Not much else though lol. Im really just needing to know what can be done to a 6.9 performance wise. I know some different companies make turbos. ARP makes head studs. I think I read the cam is a weakpoint. Anything else?

I was actually thinkin that lol. And the trucks are pretty cheap themselves. You can geta running, driving one for around 1000-1500. Figure I could part out the truck and sell the rest for scrap and only pay about $500 for the motor and tranny lol

Might as well keep the whole 6.9 truck to build from. If you already have a good running 460 truck, you might as well not fix what ain't broken.

You need more than the motor and tranny - radiator support, radiator itself, wiring harness/eng & trans control, fuel path and tanks all different.

Cheers,

I have one, sitting on a pallet. Reasonably complete. Doesn't have the fan, the injector pump is needing rebuilt, and one fuel injection line has a bad fitting. Blew the passenger side head gasket, not into the oil, just to the outside of the block. It has no other known issues, and was running fine up to the point of the gasket going toes up. Complete from front pulley to the flywheel.
Make me a good offer.

Like Mike said, 450lb-ft is easy to achieve. That will put you roughly between 200-225hp. And as far as getting more power out of it, it can be done. You will need a bigger IP and better flowing injectors as well as a better turbo and an intercooler.

And like Mike said too look for RacinNdrummin and NMB2's builds here and over at PSN. NMB2 made 292/614 on the dyno and is upgrading his injection pump even more. Racin dynoed at like 235/471 with a Turbo Cal pump. Also I forgot to mention, Typ4 dynoed at 218/464 with his cam upgrade. Here is the thread where they compare the J2 cam and Typ4 cam.

http://powerstrokenation.com/forums/showthread.php?t=120526&highlight=dyno

Also another note, Racin is working on a Db2 that should fuel a bit higher and should work out a bit better with the cam he has. His 90cc IP started defueling too early. NMB2 and Racin are also working on the 150-160cc Db4 that I mentioned earlier that should fuel higher also.

Another thought I had too is that you can also inject water/methanol or propane to make more power. They are additional ways to make more power...

Check St louis Craigslist. Last I checked there is a guy that has 3 6.9s that need work, selling cheap. I redid mine for about $2500. New piston, new bearings. Bored .040", valves done, crank was good. I was lucky though, I already had the turbo valves and the later style rockers. You want those. I really wish I would have done the cam. '83-'85.5 blocks they can crack around block heater, 87s had the later rockers. For some reason the IDI trucks around this area seem to have a higher price tag than other parts of the country. If you needed I could even drop engine off in southern Illinois. I have family in Herrin/Marion area. A sister in Olney but I don't get out there very often.
