question about PTO

I have found an 1989 F600 online that I am thinking about purchasing. I havent been able to lay eyes on it yet and the owner doesnt know. I was wondering does all of these F600 have the ability for a PTO. I am thinking about giving up on the 1969 F600 I have and updating to the 1989 one but inorder for my winch bed to work off the 1969 one, the 1989 has to have a PTO. Anybody know if the PTO is already installed? do you have to install it? Can I possible use the one off my 1969 one? is it in the same place? any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Depends on the transmission.

The trans may have the PTO drive on the other side, same side, both sides.... Depends on what it is.

I do not think Ford ever installed a PTO on a factory Chassis-cab truck.

I doubt the '89 will have the same trans as the '69, so your PTO will probably not work.

IF the truck is original, the data plate info will have a trans code that can be decoded, along with the VIN for some other info. My guess is you have an NP435 4 speed in the '69 and there is a Clark 5 speed in the '89. (WAG alert)

All I know right now is the 1989 is a 5 speed manual with a two speed axle. I am waiting on pictures of the tag and vin. So if ford didnt install ptos at the factory, I assume they make them where you can add them? where would I find that? How expensive is that and is it hard to add them on?

thanks,

Ford installed transmissions with the ability to take a PTO unit.

Scroll down here and note the bolted on panels on the sides of the Muncie, T19, NV4500, ZF5 and 6 and NV 5600. The NP435 and the T18 also have those, but they are on the other side of the box. That's where the PTO bolts up. Some are forward, some backward, some (maybe all, not sure) can be bolted either way.
Domestic Truck Tranny Guide

(something is amiss here, as the T19 is supposed to be on the passenger side...maybe the image is reversed)

Anyway, the trans could take a PTO and it was up to whoever outfitted the truck to install the PTO unit and hook it up to the accessory in question, along with the controls. My dad installed one on his F600 to run the pump for the hoist when he built the bed for the truck.

The pic here is said to be a Clark 285--possibly the trans in your target truck. Note PTO cover on passenger side.

Note all these are 6 bolt covers. Doing a little research on this, that appears to be a standard PTO configuration. Will update as soon as I can find a decent link on it.

I can't get into their "e-selection tool", but they have been making PTOs for years, and you'll have to find out what trans is in that truck to run down the correct PTO.

The 1989 F600 will undoubtedly have a transmission with PTO capability. As has been stated some transmissions have the PTO plate on the left, some on the right and some have two of them- one on each side.
Once again I refer you to Leonard's in Waco- they have hundreds of the PTO drive units on the shelf behind the front counter.

My guess is an outfit like that will, once you tell them what trans you have, be able to walk over to pile of PTO units for that trans.

The Pto will probably work with either transmission, the drive gear will most likely need to be replaced. Unless its a clark transmission. They used the same drive gear for a long stretch.

Fuller was also very good about keeping the drive gear the same. Even up till now they have a the same drive gear on the HD trans!

Either way. The PTO housings are pretty much universal. Just got to find the right gears.. Pitch and size, then drive ratio inside the pto..

another question

Rummur,
The 1969 has a New process transmission and the 1989 Is a clark I think. When you say the drive gear replaced, is that in the transmission or in the PTO?

Thanks,

The gear that would be changed is in the PTO.

What brand pto do you have?

Is it red or blue?

Being out of a 1969, the PTO you have may not have any parts support? But if its a muncie or a chelsea unit you'll easily be able to find what your looking for.. if you find the right parts guy.

PTO Color

Right now the color is "43 years of caked greasy dirt"!! That is a custom color by the way. Thanks for the info, as soon as I can get a pressurewasher after it I figure it out.

Thanks Again,
