I'm really stumped on this one and need some help. It's a 2002 explorer, 4.0, 5R55W trans, all was fine then O/D light starts flashing, so I limp it home. Trans isn't slipping, every gear works, it does kinda bang into 4th but is otherwise normal. Took it to auto zone to have the code read, but no codes found. Disconnected battery to see if it just needed a reset maybe, let it sit for a few hours, reconnect, OD light still flashes. Borrow a different OBD2 tester, still shows no codes, still drives the same just bangs into 4th.
I've read up on the solenoid pack replacement, just kind hesitant as I feel like I'm guessing at the problem and might be throwing money away.
your over-the-counter code readers will not communicate with the airbag, antilock, or transmission control computer.
if you OD light is flashing, you have a problem that the trans computer has detected. I woudlnt ignore it.
any competent mechanic's shop should have the scanner and software needed to read the transmission code. If you like your dealer, you could start there; this way if it is warranty or recall work you don't have to mess with a bunch of paper work to get it fixed. Otherwise i'd start calling transmission shops and tell them what it does and that your O/D light is flashing, and see what they say from there.
sometimes it will flash a sequence (two flashes, pause, three flahses, pause, repeat)which will be a code you can look up. (23 above) ... but i'm not sure that these work this way.
My 02 Sport trac with 160000 miles was doing the exact thing. Drove fine, no trash in the pan,and Im very particular about trans services since its a pre runner and it get used hard once in a blue moon. I took it to one of the best tranny shops in my area, where these guys have been doing my trannies my dad's, friends ect. They told me these are not the greatest trannies and they dont even rebuild them any longer. He calls them throw away trannies. So 2500 later I drove out with a factory reman trans with a 3yr unlimited mileage warranty. Now its runs and shifts like new.
