Intake restrictor.. to do or not to do...

Hello, I have an 89 Super wagon with a 460EFI that my band uses to pull a 6x10 trailer across the country. So far she is doing great with the exception of fuel economy which is to be expected. I noticed there is an air collector/restrictor between the throttle body and air box that has the IAC hose attached to it. It seems very restrictive so logic would have one cut it but I searched the forum and it seems some people argue that it increases torque by being restrictive. Does anyone think it would be beneficial to remove the collector, connect the hoses with exhaust tubing, and put a small k&n style filter on the IAC hose? I would rather do that then cut my stock collector just in case the mod hurts performance I can go back to stock. Most of my time is spent at hwy speeds pulling a heavy load with a C6 at higher RPMs.
Thanks-Dustin

Just cut the horns in front of the ribs for the intake hoses, you need the H for the IAC inlet.

Does everyone agree with this advice? Any arguments for or against? Were leaving for NC tomorrow. Thank you.

I will second that. It will take you 5 minutes to do.

In a completely stock OEM configuration the removal of the silencers hurts torque under the peak a bit and helps top side breathing. I recommend leaving it there.

With engine improvements such as:

Headers
Free flowing intake / air filter
Properly ported and prepped cylinder heads
Ported intake
Cam change
Adjustable fuel pressure regulator
Additional initial timing to 12/13 degrees
Addition of an aftermarket chip

The removal of the silencer assembly is absolutely necessary.

The above information has been quantified by way of RWHP dyno testing.

Adjustable fuel pressure regulator helps if you can set it up right. What do you got yours at? i thought about it but im not really sure what i would set it to? An with the cold air intake did you see an mpg gain or any gain. I want to get one but im still on the part of is it really worth it?

Absolutely do it. It seems to have helped my mpg by at least .5, if not a full 1 mpg. And its kinda cool because when you start puttin your foot into it, you can hear the engine sucking in air. I think that was the main purpose of these air horns. Kinda stupid...
