Check Engine Light question

Truck is a 1992 F-250 4x4 351W E4od.
When I first start the truck the CEL is off and stays off till you drive for about 2 miles or so. When I shut the truck off and try to pull the code there is nothing there

1st question is: Is this an ECm problem with not retaining codes or are there codes that will not stay in memory?

2nd question: any one have any idea where to start trying to figure out what is causing the CEL? I don't want to just start blindly throwing parts at it trying to figure it out.

Thanks

matt

There are Key On Engine Running (KOER) codes, Key On Engine Off (KOEO) codes, and Memory codes.Check the KOER codes then report back.

There is some info here

At the very least you should get the "All Clear" code of 111/111. If not you may have corroded contacts on the Diagnostic Link connector or worst case a bad PCM.

How are you checking for codes?
