I have retired!

Just an FYI for my FTE friends:

As of June 8, 2012 I have retired after 33 years as a high school teacher and 33 years as a high school soccer coach. But as I told my colleagues at school, I am not retiring, I am just changing careers! At 57 I am too young to really retire. But with the state of public education, especially here in PA, it was time to get out. I was able to buy back some sub time from when I was just out of college so altogether I have 33.95 years in the system.

I have been working hard since my last day. I did some landscape work for my sister-in-law, I have 3 lawns that I mow (besides mine), I mow about 11 acres of grass for our local soccer club, and am looking for some other part-time work. Today we are cleaning out the second floor above our garage. Our son wants to put his ping pong table up there. Both my wife and I are savers, so it will be a several day job. My truck is almost loaded with junk for the landfill. My wife wants me to get rid of my truck parts but they only take up a small corner of the space....

I told my wife if I continue in the lawn care type business, I need a small dump truck. I would love to have a 53 to 65 Ford F-350 flatbed dump! It would have to be one in working condition, not a project! And then I would not have to use my '54 for work related stuff and keep it looking nice! If you know of any around PA let me know!

Congrats on your "retirement" and thanks for your service as a teacher......I can only imagine how difficult it has become to work in the public school system.

Welcome to being semi-retired! I "retired" from truck driving a couple of years ago. Now I farm 10 acres, manage some rental property, substitute bus drive, and drive truck during peak season for UPS. I picked up a 1960 International with a flatbed dump. Fun to drive but hates to drive pass a fuel station without stopping! Anyway, I ran across this last week. I'd love to get it, but I know better than to ask. Maybe it's what you are looking for: 1952 Ford F4

Congrats Abe!!

It will be the best time of your life now, and if you can find a great 1 ton to put into use, that will make it even better. I retired in 2000, and haven't put down the wrenches since. What was your teaching specialty? Being a soccer coach had to have kept you younger than most of us gray beards here I'm betting.

Best wishes for a great next 40 years or more?? (grin)

PS: check in my gallery ..... I did just like you are planning. Got a bigger truck, and turned it into my shop rig. Got a little carried away with the rehab though ... so now I'm too careful about what I haul???

Congrats Abe, I retired 7 yrs ago April and have never looked back. I did 25 years on the city Police Dept. so I know the civil service job history. Like Garry, every day is Saturday to me. Now I just need to wait 11 more months to start collecting my SS.

Congratulations! I have been retired for 4 years now and the one comment that I hear the most from retirees is.."I'm so busy I don't know how I had the time to work a full time job".
