having the gears ratio changed

What's up guys?! I just wanted to post because I'm pretty excited... I'm having the gear ratios changed next weekend... I guess it is the late father's day gift...im going from 4.88 to 3.73... I currently average 12.5 miles per gallon... I'm hoping this number jumps a little bit. At 65 miles per hour I average 2500 rpm....

Odometer 239539
Currently driving through idaho
Gotta love the oil field biz

Tex

Hey Tex, how you been? You should have a lot of miles on that truck by now huh? Please let me know what that cost and how it works for you, I've been considering the 3.73 for a while.

I'm wanting to hear some opinions as well,I've been looking at an F450 with my BIL(for him of course),and it has 4.88s.We test drove it and the top speed was like 82 mph,I never would've imagined it would get 12.5mpg.But I'm sure it would pull ANYTHING you put behind it.

I changed to 3.73 gears three years ago on my 2008 F450, and it's worked out well for me.

What are you guys DOING? I just completed a round trip between Ohio and Atlanta, GA. about 650 miles each way. Going down I was pulling about 13,000 and averaged 9.5. I came back empty and the first tank got me to about half way through W. VA, which averaged 15 mpg, and when I got home I filled up , did the math, and got 15.7.

Deleted, tuned, intake, exhaust and 4.30 gears. Considering the truck, I'm not complaining too much at all.

15.7 is exactly what I would like to get..... I have all the other upgrades.... other than that gears .... my truck is a 2008 f 450 with the crew cab and a 12 foot flatbed on the back.... if you are getting 15.7 with 4.30 gears then I'm really xcited about my possibilities of mpg... I drive about 100,000 miles a year

I only have the gearing done to my truck. When I fisrt picked up the truck 400 miles away, I drove it home doing 75MPH and got 7.5mpg. A turner would help.

Having this done to my truck today. I was quoted about $2200.00. That was using OME parts. The ring and pinion from ford is $12??.00 dollars and the bearing is another $400.00. On Ebay you can find the ring and pinion for under $300.00 but I never saw the bearing. My labor charge is quoted at less than $400.00. At this point my truck is stock and 2000 miles away so I'll have to wait to see how it turns out.

you do know you can just swap out the whole axle from a salvage yard with the gears of your choice much cheaper?
post up in the WTB section here and trade.two parties willing to swap straight up and pay for their own shipping.buy some new hardware and install it yourself in a weekend.it's very easy.
the 6.4l is going down in history to be the equal to the 460 gas pig anyway boys.great power, but very thirsty.not a whole lot gears are going to fix imho.id like to tell ya slowing down helps, but the trans just doesn't want to let the rpms fall off from the peak power band.
you boys need a real economy trans flash in a bad way.i can tell this fast and easy just driving the thing.feels great all the time sure, but it's hard on the wallet.
