Now that my original question no longer has an affect on my stance about buying a trailer, we can stop bashing my 5.4L gas truck. Thank you for your guys' responses to those of you that actually commented with helpful information, or in a helpful manner.
Sorry to offend you, but I read the posts again and I still didn't see anything that was rude, we were trying to help you that's all. Look at it from our point of view, you're talking about lighter horses than average and a lighter trailer than average. It's very common for manufacturer stated trailer weights to be quite a bit lighter than actual. I've owned horses my whole life and hauled them as well, most of us are talking from experience. Part of the problem was a difference in terminology as well, to me, "living quarters" in a trailer require bathroom facilities. Obviously taking those out reduce weight considerably.

And who was bashing your 5.4?? Look at my sig, I own and tow w/ a 5.4, it's a great engine, that's what everyone said. In my case, the caveat was towing a lot of weight up and down mountains all day, IMO that wouldn't be fun w/ a 5.4. On flatter ground a 5.4 will do you just fine at the weights you're towing.

Stick around, it's a great forum and you can learn a lot here. And good luck in med school! It would be nice to find a doc that wouldn't tell me to quit riding when I get pitched.

I certainly didn't mean any offense either. As I said, I was picturing something different in terms of trailers, and I also said the 5.4 should be plenty for the weight you're talking about. My comments about moving up to an F350 were based on my own estimates of towing 12K - 15K. I pulled as much with F250's w/ 5.4's, 6.8's and 6.0 diesels, and finally with my current F350 drw, and though they all worked well enough, the F350 drw is so much more solid and safer feeling with those larger loads that I'll never hesitate to say it's the way to go if you're towing big and often.

Good luck with the new trailer.
