'73 C706 steering shaft bearings

the Ford Shop manual steering column diagrams do not show bearings. but the parts catalog list a lower bearing, bearing sleeve and flange[flange requires welding in place]. my steering tube has no lower bearing sleeve or flange although it appears there was a flange. i was hoping the shop manual would describe how to install these parts, also i assume there is an upper bearing?

Your truck is a C700, not a C706. C706 is just the model code that denotes the trucks gross vehicle weight rating.

There are two steering column bearings, one sleeve. One bearing (C3DZ-3517-A) and its sleeve (C4TZ-3518-A) fit inside the upper flange (below the steering wheel) that is part of the mast jacket (steering column shroud).

The parts catalog illustration does not show the bearing, just the sleeve (3518) that nestles inside it.

The lower bearing (C3TZ-3517-B) fits underneath the clamp that is located on the lower section of the mast jacket just above the toe board.

I see no lower flange, or any parts that have to welded on (I suspect a PO cobbled something up).

What I do see is that the lower section of the steering shaft and coupler has two u-joints with a double center yoke (C5TZ-3814-B) in between them.

A clamp yoke (D2HZ-3814-A) attaches to the lower steering shaft & coupler (where the lower u-joint is located), then attaches to the input shaft of the steering gearbox using a pinch bolt, two washers and a nut.

1973/79 Ford HEAVY Truck Parts Catalog ~ Illustration Section 35 ~ Page 4.

The entire column is shown in an exploded view. This catalog is available on a CD from hipoparts.com for about 22 bucks.

If you're gonna be in the LA area, you could swing on by and take a look-see. My catalog is on original FoMoCo microfiche slides.

in another post you stated that "hipo" Heavy Duty Truck catalog, was correct if it said
" for ALL series" the 1973-79 states for f600-900, i believe around 1973 Ford changed the designator from F700, to C700. indicating the tilt cab....sorry to have so many questions. the part number for Hipo's 1973-79 is MPCFHDT73-1, I believe

C 700 column bearings

Thank You, once again you are a GREAT source of knowledge and inspiration.
D. Carpenter listed the bearings as new, but only had the upper; since the minimum shipping is $9.99, i took a strtch of the imagination and ordered two C3DZ3517A's as they listed them as "upper & lower. but i was going to call them monday to confirm....
i have to repair the steering and rebuild the carborator, ASAP as the school has NOT registered or insured this truck and now they want to inspect it to ensure it meets their standard. every dollar i spend is mine as the Band Booster parents aren't helping me yet; its SUMMER, no school, no marching band competition. if they return the truck, don't accept my donation then i will have to sell it as i live in the suburbs, with an HOA!!!
i run into a fellow sailor here in my neighborhood who wears a BB-62 New Jersey, i told him we need to take a trip to San Pedro!!!
Thank's again

You don't have to call DC on Monday to confirm anything, I already gave you the info. C3DZ-3517-A upper bearing only! / C3TZ-3517-B lower bearing only!

C3DZ-3517-A .. Steering Column Bearing ~ Upper/Lower only: 1957/58 F100/250 / 1959/65 F100/250 2WD/4WD / 1966 F100/250 2WD / 1967/73 F100/250 2WD & F350.

Carpenter does not list 500 and larger series truck parts in his catalogs, no C Series truck parts of any kind. So how can DC confirm, since these parts are not listed in his catalogs?

DC is a wonderful source, but...for F100/350's only.

C700 steering wheel

tried to remove wheel, but the puller bolt hole are stipped out, obviously the PO tried to replace lower bearing and gave up. wondered why there is no lower bearing.
