Is burnt oil on the glow plugs normal?

I decided to change the glow plugs while I have the injectors out so last night I pulled the old glow plugs. All but 3 of the glow plugs had burnt oil just above the element. I am sure it is burnt oil and not fuel or coolant it has that distinct burn oil smell. Is this normal?

The glow plugs actually look pretty good for 150k miles. The odd thing though is the glow plugs from cyl 5 and 6 look almost new with very little wear.

That usually happens as you are pulling the glow plug out. The oil will wipe off so it looks like your other glow plugs, correct?

ya they are sitting in oil and are completely covered by the time you get them out but most of it is just normal oil except right there where I circled that part is thick and gooey and smells burnt

Not too bad but honestly I didn't inspect them really close.

That's what I am guessing, it just seemed odd it wasn't on the whole plug just at the end. Must have been the way I was pulling them out
