Smile Busted Leaf Spring

I recently bought a '99 F-250 SD with a 6" Rough Country suspension lift. While looking over the truck once I got home I noticed the rear passenger side leaf spring is busted. It is a 6/1 leaf pack & as far as I can tell is the factory spring. The top 2 leaf's are broken & separated by about an 1/8 inch right in the middle. The previous owner tried patching the problem by welding the leaf's to one another to stop them from moving. My question is how bad is something like this gonna effect my ride & is it something I should fix immediately? I understand it isn't gonna ride like a Cadillac with a 6" lift & 40" tires but I am trying to get the smoothest ride I can. Thanks for any input!

Are you kidding! Get a new spring or have a spring place replace the broken springs before you kill yourself...

get that death trap off the road!

ya man... or someone else who is beside you on the road when your axle hellicopters out from under your truck.

park it till its repaired... with NEW springs!
never, EVER ... try to weld a broken leaf spring.

cost of new springs - vs. - killing yourself or someone else

Sorry I posted it wrong, its the very bottom helper leaf & the bottom leaf in the pack. I know that probably doesn't make a difference but wanted to be clear. Any suggestions on a good place to get new leaf springs?

If it's a factory spring, they're about $300 for the whole pack from the dealer. Otherwise find a spring shop that can make a new leaf for it. You don't have a location listed, so it's pretty hard to direct you to a good shop near you, we have a place that specializes in truck springs here south of St Paul called Kremer spring and they're really good.

Springs are nothing to mess with. Get it fixed ASAP.

right now you have the factoryu spring with the lift kit's add a leaf to lift the rear of the truck. Youd be much better off buying a set of lifted rear springs for a six inch kit. One it will ride way better, second it wont axle rap nearly as bad, third you can get rid of them weak 13 year old springs that will break on the opposite side soon

Ok so I got new springs, they will be here tomorrow. Now for my next question, & I apologize if this is a dumb one but I've never worked with suspension parts before. I was looking under the truck today & am curious exactly how the axle is located on the spring in the right spot. Is it fool proof & they will automatically line up square & in the right position or do I need to do a bunch of measuring & squaring & stuff like that to get the axle set on the new springs properly?

There is a centering pin THROUGH the springs, that will go into the hole on the block/axle. Pretty simple once you see it.

A little 3/8" bolt and 2 U bolts hold the axle to the springs on each side.........Thats it! Make dang sure you tighten the U bolts correctly. O Get new U Bolts! Kinda neat if ya think about it. A broken leaf or 2, is a disaster waiting to happen, but a little bolt holds it all together.

Ok so in putting my new leaf's in. Does anybody know if there is a torque spec for the bolts that hold the spring in or do u just snug them up & leave a little room for the springs to work?

factory ubolts are 180ftlbs i think, after market are only around 150 or less. My new front ubolts were only 135ftlbs. Id call whoever you bought them from and ask, you dont want another problem on your hands
