Exclamation My VCT Solenoid

Afternoon All,

I am in the process of doing my double trouble... Cam Phaser replacement AND Spark Plugs on my 2006 F-150 with 85,000 miles and throwing P0345 Codes 2-3 times a week along with the rough low idle after warmup.

Today I was able to get both of the valve covers off (Pass side not completely off but enough to do the Phaser )and decided to pull both VCT solenoids.. Quick look they both looked ok.. but upon closer inspection I notice a "HOLE" in the upper screen (See attached picture).

I can almost bet 100% that the "HOLE" should not be there.... And I need to order a pair of VCT Solenoids... OR - (and I highly doubt this) are the screens available seperately?

Any thoughts?

-Steve

135 Views - No insight? I figure with all these VCT / Cam Phaser issues someone would have replaced a VCT Solenoid

I would not seek a replacement screen. Just replace the solenoid as a unit. There is no way to practically determine if the unit was damaged from contamination allowed to enter them through the damaged screen.

Thanks for the reply

So the screen IS junk.. I figured as much! Orderning new ones very soon!

Good news for me is that all 8 Sparkplugs are out! only 4 broke and the Lisle tool made short work for pulling them out!

Well I only found the bad VCT solenoids because I had the valve covers off to replace the Cam Phasers. So at that point I inspected them and discovered the HOLE in the screen.

Unfortunately since I am swapping both the Cam Phasers, VCT solenoid and the Plugs.. I won't know which on individually fixed the problem...

But guess what? It sure as hell better fix the rough idle!!

Can you take a few pics of swapping out the phasers?

I could.. but.. Someone already did a great writeup - I still have to do the drivers side cam because one of my new phasers didn't come with the bolt (big problem with Ford right now - my supplier had 48 Phasers and only 10 had bolts)

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/7...placement.html

I followed everything he said except I did NOT discharge the A/C and disconnect the hard line, as I was able to maneuver the cover on the Passenger side so I could replace the Phaser.

The phaser replacement is easy if you have the right tools and that right tool being the Timing chain Wedge - I bought one and will probably loan it out for a $10 rental as long as people give me a paypal deposit.
