The sheet metal is a little thinner, but the chassis are far heavier, the axles are larger, and the interior is filled with far more sound deadening and creature comforts. The overall cab structure is far more substantial.

I was just thinking.. if we could live with 140 hp 351 CID V8 from the 1980s which has the same power compared to today's 2.0 litre TDI... although the TDI has slightly less torque... and with the mistaken belief today's F-150s were much lighter, I thought that would work.

Ah, my bad.
My '88 F-150 4x4 reg cab weighed about 3800 lbs empty. It was a great truck and and small diesel would have been wonderful in that gen of trucks, if the chassis didn't shake apart like the old Dodges did.

The sheet metal is shamefully thin but as you stated sir, we have tons of heavy structure around plus a complete 10 bag air bag system which requires plenty of real estate to fit in.

I am not anti or opposed to diesel technology at all. I personally think it's a responsible way to go IF, it can be made affordable to buy, operate and repair.

Right now the ecoboost is doing everything that a small diesel would do but cheaper. I don't know if the 3.5L will last as long as a small diesel but I'll wager that it'll go 200K miles and that's good enough for me.

Not to mention the whole truck is bigger.

I take umbridge at that remark. I like my 98 truck style and it runs great and gets 18 mpg with 150k on the od. I also like the looks of the new trucks.
