mine was the same way in my 48.
iI used about two gal of muritic acid and water came out spotless
use ppe

I vote for putting your money into a new tank instead of time and money into the old tank and then still having to buy a new tank.

As many have already mentioned, go for a new tank! I had the same problem with my 55 when I first got it. I bought a plastic tank from Mid-Fifties and along with some new fuel line, all the fuel related problems went away. Good luck.
